@Peter, also, any idea how results may be impacted and research may be delayed when inaccurate data is delivered due to releasing a BETA to soon to production ? It's not about accuracy, it's about "security". Nothing to do with programming or science, like I said, mindless bureaucracy. |

In this case, security has everything to to with programming and science. If they release a new GPU app that we all install and it has a security flaw that allows malicious access to volunteer or IBM systems, you better believe that there would be a serious impact on participation and the research.

Well that makes more sense, I thought it was about not letting competitors see the results (which with this sort of thing should be made public). What doesn't make sense though, is how it's now passed the security check but isn't finished. How can you check the security of something that's going to change?[Edit 2 times, last edit by Peter Hucker at Feb 16, 2021 8:18:46 PM] |

The comments in response to your original post have made a lot of valid points. As no-one has had a go at answering this one yet (perhaps because, rightly or wrongly, they think it's self-evident?) I will have a go... Programs often consist of layers that can be considered in isolation. There's usually a self-contained part that does the actual calculations; that part is unlikely to provide security concerns (unless there are hardware issues). It's probably the wrapping (user interface, file access, network access and job control) that needs to be carefully checked in the case of applications such as those from WCG that corporate users might expect to trust... So if that level of isolation is possible, once the wrapper can be trusted there's no reason the part doing the calculations can't be run through tests and changed if it doesn't seem to produce the expected results. Hence the [repeat?] Alpha and Beta tests after the review... And provided they don't have to change the wrapper we should then be good to go! Hope that makes sense - Al. [Minor edit to fix a missing word or two!] [Edit 1 times, last edit by alanb1951 at Feb 17, 2021 5:37:40 AM] |

[Minor edit to fix a missing word or two!] Well it's been a lot longer than we were originally promised, so it all depends how long it takes to write the wrapper, how long to get the wrapper approved, and how long to fix the bugs inside it. We don't know what the delay is/was and whether it's going to take another week or another 6 months. All we get from them is "soon"! Are there now beta tests going on? Unlike some projects, there's no option in the preferences to accept test work. Some projects have another "project" to attach to for testing, but I've not heard of one for WCG. |

I don't think it's the people working hard on this project who need to grow up.
Forum moderation is a no-win job in terms of satisfying everybody. It's obviously not up to me but having done some over the years on other forums, I would absolutely not allow this kind of personal attack. I 2nd the motion for the moderators to deal with it. |

Fully agree - that anyone thinks it acceptable to address a problem by insulting the workers and volunteers who are trying to help is unbelievable. |
