(Disclaimer; Linux noobie up ahead) I checked this thread, but didn't see any reference to the supported OS that is being used by the Raspberry Pi. I'm interested in setting up a Pi system using the native OS, Raspbian... so my question would be: is Raspbian supported to run WCG? I know that Ubuntu is supported, but not sure if the Debain variant, Raspbian, is. I have two objectives to setting this system up: 1) Learn Linux 2) Have my own home system, since right I only have a tablet for home computing. CJSL Thanks, Crunching along the information highway FYI. Raspbian (at least the name) has been discontinued and replaced with Raspberry OS. Also there is a new Raspberry Pi imager which makes it very easy to prepare your SD card with only two clicks. Check it out here: https://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/ ![]() ![]() |

FYI: after a couple of boinc crashes on my 2 RPi 3B running Raspios (32 bit), I notice that it is necessary to extend the swap file size from 100 MB to 512 MB.

I've been contributing with a Mac and AMD Ryzen for a while. Now trying to set up a Raspberry Pi cluster using Docker Swarm. Any input in how to do this in a secure manner would be appreciated. So far, I have 6 Pi 4B's up and running Ubuntu Server. Docker seems to be installed correctly. Now have to make the swarm, add BOINC, and link to projects. Thanks for any comments.

I am the original starter of this thread and have since dropped my Pi project.
I am curious. Did you have the 6 Pi's or go out and buy them? If the latter how much did the whole setup cost. Can't help your project since I never went through with mine. If this is a learning process then I understand. My estimate is you will get about 35000 to 42000 points a day. Have you compared that to your AMD Ryzen output? |

The sad thing with Raspi & Co is that if you run linux on arm you only can contribute to OpenPandemics. And of course Rosetta.
----------------------------------------I hope there are more WCG projects in the future for linux on arm, but right now with WCG we are limited to OPN. Hope that changes soon. I set up my "NussKnacker" which consists of 15x Odroid C4. They need NO cooling - thats why i chosed them. The switch is also just passive cooled. It is perfect, 60 cores are crunching and there is no noise at all. For me the perfect choice. Now i even hate the noise of my MacBook and the NUC :-) I am sure i will buy some more C4s as soon as there are more WCG projects with support for linux on arm. BR to all linux on arm crunchers!

The sad thing with Raspi & Co is that if you run linux on arm you only can contribute to OpenPandemics Wow that is good to know. In all the research I did I had never read this. I would have gone to all this time, trouble, and money for not much.So how many WUs do you go through in 1 day and how many points does this setup produce. I can calculate the costs from the internet. Edit: OK I checked pricing. We are talking close to $1000 USD. the C4, power supply, cable, and switch. Now how many points it produces, compared to something else, is really important. Plus a lot of work but that is free. [Edit 2 times, last edit by BobbyB at May 7, 2021 4:45:47 PM] |

check WCG side, they show you for each project the requirements, no secrets there.
----------------------------------------Also help is help, as long as there is only Rosetta and OPN i support them. I am sure in the future other projects will support linux on arm too. There is more support for Android...another option for you. Points i do not care about. I know every help is welcome. If you want points you need to buy expensive hardware and pay the electricity bill :-) 1 OPN WU around 16h. So 1.5 WUs per core per day round about. The C4 has 4 cores and uses 3.3W only. So the NussKnacker makes around 90 OPN WUs per day and uses less than 60W incl switch. The real price is higher with taxes and shipment and the switch. Also i bought the 16GB EMMC for each C4. I choosed the C4 because i do not need to cool and the performance/power consumption ratio is good. I wanted something which does not boost up my electricity bill. I read that some people need to cool the Raspi a bit. So i made my decision.

around 78 BOINC credits (553 WCG points) - per WU.

Explain NussKnacker. I presume a container or stack for the 15 Odroid C4. I get nothing in any search engine but I found your team (of 1) page so now I can compare apples to apples using just stats from WCG. I'm only on WCG.
You seem to get about the same work done as the Pi without the noise: about 6000-7000+ points. This confirms with 2 others I had posts with. I use WCG points as a measuring stick presuming points for all projects are equal. I rebuilt an old computer to use a Ryzen 3900X. I spent about as much as you did without factoring in the 16GB EMMC but output 2x the work. This was my ultimate reason to get a regular PC. Spend this, get that. Using a Pi or C4 would require 30 units (3.3x30=100W) to match the Ryzen 3900X. You have different criteria: noise and electric bill. It's in the basement and I never see it or hear it. I have 3 other PCs also in the same corner. I am very fortunate/privileged for electricity. It's all hydro and about .0748/winter and .0476/summer EUR per KWH. This summer I will know if there is a difference from last year on the electric bill. Re: Actual Cost of Electricity https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewpostinthread?post=634135 |

What came out of that exercise was to realise I needed to retire an old Lenovo laptop which output work about like a Pi but used about 30W instead of 4W.
So for anyone reading this and thinking of buying an old piece of junk on eBay or in a garage sale to contribute WUs: Don't. Get one of these. |
