Am looking at the Raspberry Pi 4 to do some crunching. I've read enough to know I can get the OS and Boinc stuff to work correctly.
What I wonder is how much work can this thing do compared to an older PC. What would it compare to in Intel or AMD terms. Anyone doing this and is it worth the time I will put into it? Pointers?? |

Am looking at the Raspberry Pi 4 to do some crunching. I've read enough to know I can get the OS and Boinc stuff to work correctly. What I wonder is how much work can this thing do compared to an older PC. What would it compare to in Intel or AMD terms. Anyone doing this and is it worth the time I will put into it? I have a set of 8 Raspberry pi 4's running OPN right now. 1. OPN WU's take about 8-9 hours each 2. 8-12 results per day for each raspberry pi 4 3. 5000-6000 points per day for each raspberry pi 4 4. I don't know the power draw in watts, but they don't generate alot of heat. 5. For the record, I am using Ubuntu 20.04: https://ubuntu.com/download/raspberry-pi 6. All my raspberry pi 4's are the 4GB RAM version. That is actually more than enough memory. You could go for the 2GB version and still have extra memory. Also, there is also some special setup with the OS and BOINC to crunch WCG work units: https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,42687 Side note: don't waste your time with the raspberry pi 3 (previous generation raspberry pi). I have one of those and it is horribly slow with OPN WU's. Lastly, don't forget your active cooling. These guys can get hot! [Edit 1 times, last edit by thepeacemaker7 at Aug 13, 2020 1:43:11 PM] |

8-12 results per day sounds like an Intel duo core and so does 5000-6000 points per day.
----------------------------------------My old Lenovo T400: Processor: 2 GenuineIntel Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU P8400 @ 2.26GHz [Family 6 Model 23 Stepping 10] Nice to know that I can get away with the 2GB version. What microSD card do you use?. I read you need the high quality ones like Sandisk otherwise the cheaper ones burn out with use. Lastly you mention a set of 8. Are they stacked naked in a special cabinet or each with its individual casing. [Edit 1 times, last edit by BobbyB at Aug 14, 2020 4:59:53 AM] |

@ Bobby B:
----------------------------------------I have 21 RPi's ranging from Version 2, 3, 3B, 4, 4B & a 4B with 8 GB RAM. 16 of them are in a cluster array using Yahboom cluster: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07K72STFB/...n_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 The rest are stand-alone cases with dual mini fans. You must have sufficient cooling. I use 16GB Sandisk and have never had one fail. Hope this helps and good crunching. ![]() ![]() |

Definitely something I need to try if just for the experience. The cluster sounds good if I decide to go more than 1.

(Disclaimer; Linux noobie up ahead) I checked this thread, but didn't see any reference to the supported OS that is being used by the Raspberry Pi. I'm interested in setting up a Pi system using the native OS, Raspbian... so my question would be: is Raspbian supported to run WCG? I know that Ubuntu is supported, but not sure if the Debain variant, Raspbian, is. I have two objectives to setting this system up:
----------------------------------------1) Learn Linux 2) Have my own home system, since right I only have a tablet for home computing. CJSL Thanks, Crunching along the information highway |
