another 24H with no visible progress, MCM validation queue is longer, the oldest example from FEB 23 is still there

Looks like the feeders have quit again. I am dry on one machine and will be dry on the others in a bout an hour.

There's no new work.
----------------------------------------Validation is stalled. Beta testing for MAM was promised 3 months ago and we're still waiting. It's sad to see the decline at WCG. 10 to 15 years ago there were numerous projects running at any one time, including regular beta testing. Sigh. ![]()

We are seeing the difference between the data centre IBM used and a completely different [dominantly academic related] data centre[*1] which had some outdated equipment that is currently being replaced.
I suspect a lot of the criticism WCG have been getting when things break would have been alleviated if there was more frequent communication between them and the users. However... :-) Some (if not most) of the previous major issues were due to equipment failures, and the current issues are related to ongoing work following on from the end-of-year outage that allowed upgrades to power and environment equipment. At present, the data centre's old facilities are apparently running at something like 25% of previous capacity, and the new facilities aren't production-ready yet. One side-effect of this is that no jobs are allowed to run for more than 3 days, and evidence suggests that to be the cause of bits of WCG (such as validators and work generators and feeders) seeming to disappear! I am unsure as to how much effort would be required to re-organize WCG data centre usage to cope with shorter lived VMs; we'll just have to wait and see what the [one man] tech team comes up with if WCG and the data centre can't organize a workaround :-( As for the MAM Beta, I suspect "tech team" has a lot of more urgent things to deal with at the moment, courtesy of the above-mentioned data centre issues :-( Cheers - Al. *1 Another BOINC project, CPDN, is hosted on a [UK] academic data centre; there are occasional outages there, sometimes announced in advance but sometimes unexpected. If a project is small enough to run its own systems, things can be easier [most of the time...], but... |
