Re: Covid-19 - Discuss Scientific Papers

Study finds hydroxychloroquine helped coronavirus patients survive better

A surprising new study found that the controversial antimalarial drug hydroxychloroquine helped patients survive better in the hospital.

Not very new.

More recent studies have already shown that the side effects cause more deaths than not using it at all.

WHO halts hydroxychloroquine trials after failure to reduce deaths

Robert, Thanks I agree. I just think that seeing the scientific paper is important.

Comparing SARS-CoV2 with SARS-CoV and influenza pandemics - The Lancet Infectious Diseases

This paper compares transmissibility, hospitalization, and mortality rates for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-Cov2) with those of other epidemic coronaviruses, such as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) and Middle East respiratory coronavirus (MERS-CoV), and pandemic influenza viruses.

Re: Covid-19 - Discuss Scientific Papers

An article claiming that hydroxychloroquine can help control COVID-19 safely, but only if used with a zinc supplement.

It says that the main thing hydroxychloroquine does in this treatment is to help the zinc get into the cells, and therefore toxic doses are not needed.

The zinc acts on the virus instead.

This is NOT a scientific paper, but it still suggests something for the scientists to test.

There is a scientific paper on this, although not yet peer-reviewed.

Research in the Context of a Pandemic

The current literature on the treatment of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is filled with anecdotal reports of therapeutic successes in clinical trials with small numbers of patients and observational cohort studies claiming efficacy with little regard to the effect of unrecognized confounders. For the field to move forward and for patients' outcomes to improve, there will need to be fewer small or inconclusive studies and more studies such as the dexamethasone trial now reported by RECOVERY Collaborative Group in the Journal.
