Well, no HSTB since February 2021. But then, with so few sent out every day, I might as well take a chance on the lottery instead. Much bigger chance to win....

If you want HSTB WUs, you have to work to get them!

If you want HSTB WUs, you have to work to get them! I'm retired, I don't want to work, I want to be spoon-fed. |

It seems like the best way for me to get HST work units is to fire up an old laptop and put it to work on WCG. All three of the work units that I've done, and the one that just showed up about half an hour ago, have come on one or the other of my old ThinkPad X201 machines. Naturally, the early-generation i7s in these machines throttle down mightily under sustained load (the i5 version is said to be far better). We'll see how much time this one takes - I don't remember how long the other ones took, but it was a while. They made it OK, though.
I can get more oomph from the x201s with a BIOS "performance" setting, but that makes them run just a degree or two shy of thermal shutdown. The hilarious thing is that a Raspberry Pi 400 trounces the throttled i7 in compute power. |

Gosh...,
After many months of no HSTB tasks, I suddenly got 2 of the rare creatures, I'd better go out and buy myself a lottery ticket. |

Congrats Grumpy Swede ! I'm still trying (but not hard enough to game it) Thanks Unixchick ! I had forgotten that I ticked HSTB, in that Device Profile. I had more or less ruled out any chance to get any HSTB task, since there's just a few hundred of them sent out every day. So, big surprise when I saw 2 of them in my BoincTasks window. |

That HST work unit finally made it through - after over 46 hours of elapsed time. Naturally, the wingman had it in just under 13. Oh well, as long as the numbers get crunched.

The Ryzen 5950 takes care of them in under 9.5 hours. This is with the CPU loaded such that the boost clock is settling around 3.8 GHz.
