Oh, that's interesting you have a ASROCK Taichi also. I have a question for you. If you sudden lose power to your PC, does it fail to reboot? Or takes forever to reboot? I often have to do a system restore or wait HOURS for it to find Windows 10 again. It's done this since day one. I can only put it down to the mobo. The Windows logo just spins round and round. Just last week I swapped a GPU between slots and had the same issue. It's quite frustrating. I was always curious if other had the same issue. I also stopped using the built in wifi. That well known issue of having to reinstall the wifi driver all the time drove me up the wall. Every time my PC crashed I'd have to reinstall the Intel wifi driver :( All hardwired now with Cat 6 so no issue anymore. Hi, Sorry for late reply! If it takes forever to reboot, at the POST step of the boot process then it is probably DDR4 RAM Training (if RAM timings aren't all correctly set for stability the board will reboot several times with different timings in hopes of finding a set of settings that will work). I've had problems with the board not recognizing NVMe SSD Drives (both Samsung 960 Evo and 970 Evo). And that's not after a sudden power failure, but on cold boot it may happen somtimes. I know that BCLK overclocking may cause such issues, but I'm not doing BCLK OC'ing. But I haven't had any problems with the thing spinning while loading Windows 10 though...maybe you can check your Windows event log for any interesting things there - it should start logging while loading the OS I believe. And I have not had any issues with the WiFi driver having to be reinstalled, maybe there are some specific conditions that have to be met for it to trigger. Are you in latest BIOS? I'm on 3.30. As some have mentioned, a good UPS is a good thing to have if you are experiencing frequent power losses. ![]() Join The International Team: https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/team/viewTeamInfo.do?teamId=CK9RP1BKX1 AMD TR2990WX @ PBO, 64GB Quad 3200MHz 14-17-17-17-1T, RX6900XT @ Stock AMD 3800X @ PBO AMD 2700X @ 4GHz |

I have installed it now, checked the two check boxes and waiting to see how it will impact any WCG performance metrics, if at all. I'll return with some experiences when I have some data. ![]() Join The International Team: https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/team/viewTeamInfo.do?teamId=CK9RP1BKX1 AMD TR2990WX @ PBO, 64GB Quad 3200MHz 14-17-17-17-1T, RX6900XT @ Stock AMD 3800X @ PBO AMD 2700X @ 4GHz |

Why bother with windows. Just install Linux in a dual boot option and crunch with Linux. When I do decide to spend the bucks for this chip, I will crunch with Linux.

Here's an update:
----------------------------------------The PC had been up and crunching nonstop since Jan 14th 2019 (last restart). Installed the Coreprio application and service at about 1AM local time. Went to sleep. Woke up at 8AM and whoa - Black Screen of Death! Rebooted the PC and got the "No boot device..." POST error I mentioned earlier that I get with this motherboard. So, it is a very interesting coincidence that within a few hours after installing the coreprio service Windows crashed. Anyway, I'm back up and running again. Will let it run once again and see what will happen. Regarding Linux...well...I'm much mnore comfortable in Windows and have all the applications that I need there. Since I use the PC daily (as it is my main PC also as well as my main cruncher) I don't want to dual-boot. Also, then it won't be able to do crunching in Linux while I'm using it for other tasks in Windows? And I would have to remember to boot back into Linux when I'm done in Windows? ![]() Join The International Team: https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/team/viewTeamInfo.do?teamId=CK9RP1BKX1 AMD TR2990WX @ PBO, 64GB Quad 3200MHz 14-17-17-17-1T, RX6900XT @ Stock AMD 3800X @ PBO AMD 2700X @ 4GHz |

@Chooka
----------------------------------------I'd seen your stats VietOz as I spend a lot of time trolling stats. Very impressive rigs you have! You're like my Gold Lotto dream LOL. tongue Oh..btw which thermal paste application method did you use? I've seen a video on Gamers Nexus where the "big blob" worked best lol. I originally went with the std AMD application method of 5 dots. Sorry for the late reply! I used the 3 lines parallel method. 1 line right underneath the word Threadripper ... same length with the word. 1 line right above the word AMD ... same length with the bottom line. And 1 line in between, shorter line.... kind of an insurance fill. I do this on both of my 2990WX and 1950X and it worked quite well. My house ambient is around 22-23C most of the time and my 2990WX will run anywhere from 57C - 61C at 3.3ghz ... depend on project. My 1950X will run 56-63C depend on project. I have NOT run Primegrid and Asteroid (avx) yet due to the roller coaster weather and I can't keep my AC on all the time. However, about a week ago, I noticed my 2990WX shot up to 67C while I was at work. Called home and wifey said it's 82F (about 27C) inside the house. I forgot to tell her to run the AC in the afternoon. She loves the heat so 82 won't bother her and she'll forget if I don't remind her about my machines lol. All that said, if my 2990WX didn't go past 70C while running 100% on all 64 threads at 27C ambient then I'm pretty sure it'll be ok at 29C ambient. I only have 1 fan on the Noctua, BUT I used open case ... a crypto mining GPU rack to be specific ... and I love those things lol. I don't care about the looks, I just don't like my cpu to go near 70C. In your case, I'd try to reseat the heatsink. Look online for the images of the location of the die in the TR. Try to apply the TIM to those area ... doesn't need to cover the whole thing. Also don't overvolt your cpu. 1950X runs good on stock voltage up to 3.6ghz. Turn off Auto Precision Boost if you manual overclocking. As for OS ... for crunching... Linux. For your daily driver ... use whatever you're comfortable with. If you want to use windows for your games/applications ... and at the same time you want better performance for your crunching... then use Vbox and install Linux on a VM machine and crunch on the VM. Points will be better than you crunch on native windows. Sorry for the long post! Hope you'll solve the overheat issue soon because it's fun .. very fun to crunch on these TR. Happy crunching!! ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by VietOZ at Feb 9, 2019 4:59:31 AM] |

You could possibly have a misbehaving CPU, way back when I bought my first Ryzen 7 I had no end of trouble with it and virtually replaced everything in the system (motherboard, cooling - twice and a giant case to get more air into it) trying to track down the cause, in the end it was the CPU which to AMD's credit they tested and replaced within three days. As for crunching with Linux, yes it will give more performance and if I'm not mistaken there is a windows app that allows you to run ubuntu apps within windows, whether it will run Boinc or not I have no idea as I havent tried it yet. |

Wow you must be in a southern area to be 22C in Feb. I am in the mid atlantic and its about -3C here now. I set my heat down low when nobody is home, or if its just me (I don't mind the cold, just wear a fleece around the house ![]() |

Even when it's 0C outside I'll still have to leave one window open with a fan sucking cold air in. If the outside temp is above 60F, you'll hear my AC running. I love those crypto mining frames. I can stack 4-5 machines up. Save me from having to find a shelf or rack for them. The best part is the looks of your friends and family when they come over ![]() They're not typical case that you can put on your table, but if you stack them up and sit "the rack" somewhere ... it looks cool. |
