Re: RYZEN Threadripper 2990WX 32-Core

Sounds like you are saying not ready for WCG because of the MBs or lack of one.

Re: RYZEN Threadripper 2990WX 32-Core

An alternative is AMD's Epyc 7551P 32c/64t cpu with 180W TDP. It's about US$2,400 for the CPU and another US$700 for a suitable mobo, so not as cheap as the TR2990WX. However, easier to deal with from a power/heat perspective.

So, who has tested that combo with WCG?

I don't know if anyone is running BOINC on the Epyc 7551P. However, Level1Techs has recently reviewed this processor.

All I'm saying is be careful with overclocking. Things can go bad really quickly.

2990WX crunched fine at stock speed.
I found that it's best to let it do its thing. In another word, leave Core Performance Boost on Auto. Just adjust Dram speed to 3200mhz(if your kit is capable) and Dram voltage to 1.35v. Leave everything else on Auto.
I ran one of mine with manual settings VS auto settings for about a week and the different between the 2 was very minimal... as you can see the RAC between them is almost neck to neck.

Manual cpu multiply 35.5 vs 33
Manual Dram speed 3200mhz vs 3200mhz
Manual Dram timing 14-14-14-31 vs Auto
Manual Vcore 1.05v vs Auto
Core peformance boost disable vs Core performance boost Auto
Identical hardwares

So technically the manual setting rig should run a little faster ... but it didn't show much with Zika. Not worth the power consumption and the heat. I may try to compare again with other project after new year.

Re: RYZEN Threadripper 2990WX 32-Core

I love the Noctua cooling solutions. A little more expensive, but you get what you pay for. I have a NH-U12S with push/pull fans on my 1700 (non x) stock speeds and according to HWMon with 100% CPU load (currently a mix of zika and fah2) my max temps are 43C with ambient temp around 21-22C. I also have two Noctua 140mm intake, one Noctua 140mm rear exhaust, and one Noctua 140mm top exhaust. Highly recommend their products.

Re: RYZEN Threadripper 2990WX 32-Core

Software fix can double Threadripper 2990WX's performance in certain workloads

Turns out performance issues were Windows' fault all along
---
[omissions]
Jeremy at Bitsum has implemented a fix in the CorePrio utility, which you can download now to check out the performance improvement. Tentatively titled the ‘NUMA Dissociator’ the fix essentially creates a phony UMA mode, where Windows no longer cares about sending the threads to an ‘ideal’ core. In Indigo the performance doubles to 3.0, and in 7-Zip compression, the performance jumps an impressive 71%.

Notably, though, the 2990WX is still 22% slower in Windows than Linux in 7-Zip, even with the fix. It’s possible that a properly implemented solution by Microsoft could narrow the gap even further. Considering how lazy Microsoft has been in not even searching for the problem, however, I wouldn’t be too optimistic that one is coming.

Re: RYZEN Threadripper 2990WX 32-Core

Actually I didn't have good results with the 2990WX. I think it was related to the fact that it has 4 core packages, but just 2 memory controllers. I used the 1950X before and the calculation time for wcg nearly doubled when I went for the 2990WX. The double amount of cores was compensated by longer calculation times. So I sent it back and put it in my 1950X again.
