I am pleased to report that access to the data export files has been re-activated and is available again. Volunteers who wish to access the data will not need to sign a Data Processing Agreement or obtain tokens. The review concluded that if volunteers are given explicit notice of and sufficient control over how their data is used, there was no legal justification for imposing any further restrictions on the data export files. The review also concluded that we will likely need to reinforce and strengthen the consent language in a few places on our website, but that doesn't stop us from opening up access to the data exports in the meantime. This process took significantly longer than any of us hoped or anticipated, and we understand people's frustrations while we had to disable access pending the legal review. But we felt it was important to push back aggressively on what was initially a process more appropriate to a commercial engagement than a philanthropic initiative and to persevere until we had an outcome that was both GDPR-compliant as well as volunteer-friendly. Finally, a reminder that while access to the data exports is now unrestricted, the export files only include data of volunteers who have opted to make their information public. Thanks as always for all your support, Juan So finally after knowing what was coming for more than 2 YEARS! the lawyers responsible for this mess have finally come to a agreement? I am glad that this mess is finally solved and I truly hope that the lawyers responsible for this will be fired. |

I guess one could argue that if you want to be private, you wouldn't join a team. I was about say that very thing. If it becomes an issue, the simplest thing to do would be for going private to auto quit any team the member was part of. |

Think of how much more smoothly things would go if lawyers were paid to successfully complete projects, instead of by the hour...
----------------------------------------Thanks to the WCG team for standing up to the legal team and getting a solution that doesn't require the stat site admins to sign legally binding contracts. |

Thanks to the WCG team for standing up to the legal team and getting a solution that doesn't require the stat site admins to sign legally binding contracts. The first legal case brought in the EU for a violation of privacy rights could change that situation quickly. |

The first legal case brought in the EU for a violation of privacy rights could change that situation quickly. Maybe, if the cause is valid and in that case it should. I rather see that action will be taken if there is a violation of privacy rights than turning a blind eye to it. [Edit 2 times, last edit by Simplex0 at Jul 21, 2018 5:46:25 PM] |

wcgsig update last night appears to have failed to generate a signature today.
----------------------------------------Could be because GDPR blackout was more than than the 30 day inactive shutdown, but I would have expected that ALL WCG would have suffered the same blackout result. Lets hope tomorrow will show activity to WCG again and revive the statistics, even if GDPR has skewed this all up!!!!! ![]() |

appreciated this was gotten back up and running. i can understand the reason for the GDPR, but we (users) are purposefully submitting data/CPU time, so we already know our data is being used (the power bill and heat is very very obvious that we're doing this on purpose).

Quite right. What is "privacy" anyway in this case? But tell that to the EU. They instituted the rules, apparently including your IP address as your "private" information. |

IP address as your "private" information. The reason for this is relatively easy to understand. In many European countries, there is a requirement for ISP to keep the IP address allocated to a user for about 12 months. For European authorities, the allocated IP address is considered as being an user's "unique identifier" at a specific period of time. Many web sites record the user IP address as a way to authenticate the user and its transaction. It shows who critical the IP address could be in terms of data privacy. Cheers, Yves |

If the EU wants to protect privacy to that extent, that is their decision. But there is no point then in blaming IBM for following the procedure as they read it. If someone else wants to interpret the procedure differently and apply for a job in the IBM International Law department, I am sure IBM will carefully consider their qualifications.
