Operating System = Windows 10
OS language = Dansk (Danish) Keyboard layout = QWERTY Browser = Google Chrome for composing long posts (occasionally Internet Explorer 11 but not for long posts) Can you type one character that has given your trouble before é then if you could try after that to try and enter that character by holding down ctrl-shift and pressing u. This should bring up a little underlined u where you can type e9 then hit space. This should output the character é. Hope I understand this correctly. I will use the character ’æ’. …one character that has given your trouble before é æé The ’æ’ has given me trouble. I have never used æ before é but I take it it’s your way of trying to diagnose so I type æé * …then if you could try after that to try and enter that character by holding down ctrl-shift and pressing u. 'that character' must be my æ When I enter æ and after that ctrl-shift-u I get æ followed by a 'you-cannot-do-that pling' and I just have my æ and no underscore and certainly no output in the form of é My motoric skills do not allow me to press æ+ctrl-shift-u simultanously (using three fingertips), if this is what you intend to instruct me to do. * *-* This I have made in Notebook and saved as .txt in the UTF-8 format locally which I now will copy-paste into the text field and then repeat the above two steps on line. I confess that I'm foreign to using keyboard commands and fumble when doing it). I would use my mouse - and in this case the command ^there resulting in æ ************************************************************* æé æ ************************************************************* I'm sorry I cannot do better. Please explain what I do wrong as per your instructions. |

Hi little mermaid, armstrdj is asking you â¦
to try and enter that character by holding down ctrl-shift and pressing u. This should bring up a little underlined u where you can type e9 then hit space. This should output the character é. You should do this as follows: - Use your left hand to hold down the left 'Ctrl'- and 'Shift'-keys simultaneously (use your thumb to press the Ctrl-key and your forefinger to press the Shift-key). - Type the 'u' key with your right forefinger. - Release the left 'Ctrl'- and 'Shift'-keys. - Type the 'e' key. - Type the '9' key. - Tap the spacebar or the Enter key (to tell 'em you're ready) This will result in: é So, armstrdj is asking you to type ctrl-shift-u followed by a hexadecimal sequence of characters and a final Enter. To type 'Ã', you would type ctrl-shift-u followed by the sequence 'c6' and Enter (see this link). |

Ha! https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewpostinthread?post=552784 was posted after several times 'Preview' and then 'Reply to the post'. Luckily, I had the correct contents of the message copied to my buffer (ctrl-a + ctrl-c) before I posted the message, so I would be able to post the correct contents. So I pasted (ctrl-v) the buffer into the 'Quick reply to the post' and clicked 'Reply to the post' again. This resulted in https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewpostinthread?post=552785

OK, adriverhoef, let's go:
You should do this as follows: - Use your left hand to hold down the left 'Ctrl'- and 'Shift'-keys simultaneously (use your thumb to press the Ctrl-key and your forefinger to press the Shift-key). - so far so good. I can do that - Type the 'u' key with your right forefinger. - still keeping the Ctrl and Shift down? if so, I'm stuck right there. I get the 'you-cannot-do-that!' pling sound So would that mean that my keyboard is sick? - or - God forbid - I am? And what do I do wrong? And what would you suggest? |

No, I'm not.
In Notepad, and it gives me that pling. Will try the browser (Chrome) now: 'Ctrl'- and 'Shift'-keys simultaneously (use your thumb to press the Ctrl-key and your forefinger to press the Shift-key). Yup. And still keeping those keys down typing /tapping 'u' with my right forefinger and release the ctrl and shift I do release the 'u' before releasing ctrl and shift, right? I type the 'e' and the '9' and then press enter and I get a perfect e9 - no é and no "No trespassing" pling either Should I laugh or cry? Should you? Just repeated that. Result: e9 Sorry, if I'm giving you and everybody grey hairs. Thank you adriverhoef for your patience and guidance. |

Well this is obviously an encoding issue but I can not seem to recreate it. Can you try and quote my post above with the Dansk characters and see if they show up correctly for you. Also if I understand correctly this does not always happen, in other words sometimes the characters show up as they should but other times they do not.
Thanks, armstrdj |
