This weekend's Tectonic puzzle was one without colours. The first steps were to put a 3, a 2 and a 4 in the bottom right area and a 3 in the top right area, and the rest follows:
SOLUTION
Al, you mentioned KenKen and Futoshiki. I didn't know/remember their names, so after looking them up, I recognized KenKen (http://www.kenkenpuzzle.com/howto/solve) and from what I've experienced it is a challenging puzzle most of the time. Futoshiki didn't immediately ring a bell for me (https://www.futoshiki.com/ - not the best readable site in my experience, luckily there are others) and once I understood the logic, I realized I must have played it in the past, and what do you know, after looking through some magazines I finally found a (solved) Futoshiki! ![]() ![]() Thanks to you all for your participation! Adri PS There is a puzzle ready and waiting to be posted next weekend, ![]() Al, at what stage is yours, do you have one ready by the weekend after that? |

Adri,
----------------------------------------Thanks for the confirmation of solution :-) Regarding the puzzle types I mentioned, there are variants of them in "Simon Tatham's Puzzles" which I've got on my Android phone and tablet... I also found a version in the Ubuntu repository, but I tend not to let myself get sidetracked by that, as computers are mostly for WCG stuff (apps, forums and stats-gathering) and other BOINC projects... :-) As for my puzzle effort - I haven't looked at it again since I last posted about it (too much time spent trying to answer forum posts then [usually] giving up because I reckoned I'd be wasting my time [as in "it won't be read"[*1]] or it would offend someone by accident[*2]...) However, I'll try to get back to it over the weekend and will let you know one way or the other as soon as I can... Cheers - Al. [*1] I noticed you spotted one of those elsewhere -- my post ended up at the bottom of a page and the next poster presumably hadn't read it (it was relevant...) [*2] If I really want to offend someone I'll let them know about it, not use language that can be misinterpreted -- I don't want to be a politician [who might be deliberately ambiguous!] :-) [Edit 1 times, last edit by alanb1951 at Jun 16, 2023 2:32:35 AM] |

How shall I explain this weekend's puzzle? All answers are 5 letters long, except the last two (both are 4 letters long). Each last letter of an answer is the first letter of the next answer, except the last ones: answer 18 ends at 19, answer 20 ends at 21, and answer 22 ends at 23. In this way there is a nice pattern to be seen if you connect the numbers 1 and 5, 2 and 4, and 8 and 6 diagonally by a straight line(*1); remarkable is that all these diagonal-endings are numbers below 10. The direction of the words varies as can be seen in the diagram below: sometimes words turn the corner, the last answer even turns the corner twice. Obviously, the answers follow the direction that is indicated by the diagram, starting at the top left square and ending in the very middle square.
----------------------------------------There was a difficulty: when I tried using arrows (without numbers) in the diagram to indicate the direction, the vertical lines didn't align properly, so after some experimenting I decided to only use numbers instead of arrows. DESCRIPTIONS 1. A task that has finished gets uploaded immediately and is then ..... to report. 2. Opposite of old. 3. Small tropical tree of the family Myrtaceae, cultivated for its edible fruits. 4. Unit of capacity used for dry measure in Egypt, equivalent to 198 liters. 5. Software platform for distributed computing or "volunteer computing". 6. The husks of grains and grasses that are separated during threshing. 7. When every task in a batch fails, it is due to a ..... in it. 8. Three in French. 9. Facts that are obtained from analysing information expressed in numbers (abbr.). 10. A gymnastics term for a somersault or flip. 11. Unstable toxic gas made up of three oxygen atoms. 12. Short lyric poem of any form, usually placed at the end of a poetry collection. 13. Adri,
That was interesting, to put it mildly. :-) -- I'm not quite sure what to call such a puzzle, as I''m not sure it's a "spiral crossword" (for example), and I'd never seen anything like it before! I'll admit to having to do a search for the Egyptian measure of volume - fortunately, I was sure about both the end letters so that helped... I note that whilst it would have been possible to find some 5-letter words to wrap up, it would've been impossible to get the right letters for what I presume is a deliberate vertical "Easter Egg" :-) Thanks a lot for yet another fascinating challenge. Cheers - Al. |

Hi Adri,
Thank you for another fun puzzle. I had to look up 4 and 12, and I had to scratch my head quite a bit on some of the other questions ![]() I look forward to seeing the solution later this week to see if I got it right! Cheers, Mark |

I got most of it licked, but not 15. I am just going to leave it and wait for the solution because I obviously have something else askew, but I have devoted all the time I care to this puzzle. I am sure the answers will be illustrative.

This weekend's puzzle was helix-shaped. Starting at the top left position, each 5-letter word overlapping the next one was the first objective, the other objective was to hide at least one Easter egg in the puzzle and to make it not extremely difficult to find the words.
SOLUTION
It was possible to use only 5-letter words in the puzzle with one letter overlapping, but there were also two Easter eggs, so I had to find a solution to squeeze them into the puzzle. In the end I decided to use two non-overlapping 4-letter words. READY was of course a term from the BOINC Manager software program, and BOINC was also an answer. In description 5 I dropped the term "VOLUNTEER computing", well … When trying to hide the words COMMUNITY (vertically from bottom to top, 5th column) and VOLUNTEER (horizontally from right to left, 4th row) I was wondering what orientation I should use, because there aren't that many possibilities when you want them to intersect. So this puzzle was the result. Thank you for participating! Adri |

Adri,
Thanks for the solution -- I'd got it right, but I must admit I hadn't noticed the horizontal Easter Egg :-( -- my eyesight must be going :-) Cheers - Al P.S. On a more serious note regarding eyesight -- I've just had some laser eye surgery on an eye that had cataract surgery a couple of years ago so I don't think I can trust myself to properly proof and then submit my puzzle this weekend... It was nearly ready but I'd ended up changing one or two words because I couldn't come up with clues that didn't contain the word itself, so I was still at the proofing stage yesterday... Sorry about that :-( |

Al, sorry to hear about your eye needing laser surgery. I hope everything will be in order with it soon. We have a saying "If it doesn't go the way it should, then it should go the way it goes."
Wishing you all the best! Adri |

I never did get 15. I can see now how that answer would apply, but it is not intuitive to how I think as I am not a gamer. I did not see either Easter egg, but once again, I did not think to look for them in that manner. Number 20 I got because it seemed nothing else made any sense, but I pretty much have always equated a null pointer as either zero or looking at a non-existent address.
----------------------------------------I took a screen shot of the puzzle and then blew it up a bit in Paint, then printed it. As I filled in the answers, somehow I got a couple of the spacings wrong and that confused the dickens out of me. But I see now how I should have corrected my spacings. I did have to look up that Egyptian volume, never heard of it before. Thanks for the puzzle, it made me think and it was interesting. Cheers
