Adri,
Thanks for the solution so I could check my answer :-) It was interesting comparing those hints with the order in which I began my solution -- a perfect match if I recall correctly :-) I probably ought to record the order in which I find cells to fill in if/when there's another one of these... The hints also demonstrated why Sudoku-X puzzles might be a little easier to solve than non-X versions [unless they have fewer initial clue cells] -- the X restrictions are quite helpful! Even with that help, however, this one definitely classified as Hard or Very Hard. Cheers - Al. |

This weekend's puzzle is a crossword with a small twist.
It started out with a small 5×5 subgrid, then it grew larger and larger. ![]() The crossword isn't a normal one, of course. ![]() ![]() This diagram led to some difficulty. The lines were too wide for the forum at first, so that I had to cut one column (1 character wide) from each square to make the lines somewhat shorter and make it fit in this post on the foum.

Adri,
----------------------------------------Thanks for this puzzle, and all the effort that is needed to fit something like this into a forum post -- it would tend to put me off, as I don't always manage to keep up with other aspects of following WCG forums (as you may have noticed in threads in one of the other forums!) Another nice puzzle, though I needed to find one answer on the Internet (my Spanish geography wasn't up to the 6 Down clue) and it was a good job that 16 Across had every letter checked (I'd never heard of that, and it was one of the words not in my [printed] dictionary when I tried to verify it.) I also needed to check 10 Across online -- I thought I knew what the answer was but, again, my dictionary didn't think it worthy of an entry :-) I'll defer comment on 29 Across for now, to avoid hinting; my music knowledge wanted to say "coda" but 4 isn't 5... :-) The inadequacy of my dictionary is, of course, a reflection of pre-World Wide Web times; it's interesting to note the missing items, but there is information elsewhere, so no complaints!... Cheers - Al. [Edit 1 times, last edit by alanb1951 at Jun 4, 2023 8:54:36 PM] |

Cheers - Al. Likewise It was a puzzle I enjoyed. Both 10 across and 16 across I had to look up as I had never heard of them. As with Al, I first thought of coda, but of course it tuned out to be another word I had never heard of. My grasp of Spanish geography is probably less than Al's, so I had to look that one up also. Thanks for making it and look forward to the solution to check my answers. Cheers

Adri,
Thank you very much for this puzzle, which I enjoyed. Like Al and Sgt Joe, I had a spot of bother with 6 Down and 10 and 16 Across. I am slightly embarrassed to confess that I knew the answer to 29 Across, but would have struggled if it had been a 4 letter clue. ![]() Cheers, Mark |

Mark,
Nothing to be embarrassed about -- I can remember the probable coining of the word by Viv Stanshall of the Bonzo Dog Doodah Band in 1967 :-) It only seems to have gained mass acceptance this century, though... Cheers - Al. |

Al,
Thanks for referring me to the Bonzo Dog Doodah Band! I can’t say that I had heard of them but have enjoyed Googling them and watching some of their videos on YouTube. I see that one of their members was Neil Innes, whom I do know from his work with Monty Python! Cheers, Mark |

Interesting to hear about the Bonzo Dog Band, as they were called on the single The Intro And The Outro.
SOLUTION
Soon my missing FRONT TOOTH will be replaced by the final crown. One year ago I had a terrible accident - causing a heavy concussion(*1) - where my already crowned front tooth was knocked so badly (by a TOTAL SMASH(*2) of my face on the pavement), that it had to be extracted right away that same night as I couldn't close my mouth properly. Still two weeks later one unnoticed sizeable tooth splinter(*3) had to be removed from my lip. It was quickly decided that I needed an implant. About half a year later, after some bone grafting and placing a dental implant several months ago, the titanium screw shaped rod that was inserted into my jawbone began to fuse with my bone in a process known as osseointegration. In ORDER to let it fuse altogether you, as a patient, have to be patient. So, now that the fusion process is completed (this takes around 4 months) I received an abutment that was screwed into the implant. Maybe you noticed that I wrote 'my already crowned front tooth'; it's not the FIRST time that that front tooth was replaced. In my youth, as a CHILD, it was accidentally CUT in half in a football match(*4); that's where I received my FIRST crown. [*1] The brain is a vital(*5) ORGAN, so mine was checked in the hospital. [*2] It seems that this term is mostly used to indicate a big hit in music. [*3] I lost several tooth CHIPS in the accident and some got stuck in my lip. [*4] Actually, a BRUSH on a stick was involved, better known as a broom. [*5] I should have used that word (VITAL), not VIRAL, in the puzzle. :-) ![]() Thank you for participating and for your nice comments! Adri |

I was and still am a bit baffled by the 25 diagonally. I get where "cuts" come from but not "cutsh." Apparently the "h" is not to be included. Although I did find there is a radio for R & B that goes by Cutsh.
----------------------------------------Nevertheless an interesting story in a puzzle concept. Thanks I can identify with the implant as I had one about a year ago. Stemmed from being hit in the mouth with a baseball when I was about 12. I did not lose the teeth at that time as they were quite loose, but with care they stayed put and thrived for more than 50 years. Unfortunately, eventually the roots died and they needed to be extracted, thus the need for the implant. Glad I opted for the implant rather than the dentures. Lengthy procedure, but worth it. Cheers

I was and still am a bit baffled by the 25 diagonally. Please read carefully, Sgt.Joe ![]() Diagonally (only 3 letters each! all ending in the same letter) BTW - Thank you for your supportive comment! Adri |
