Re: New Beta Test - January 12, 2017 [ Issues Thread ]

I'm only getting 8 at a time - 8 cores 8 tasks? - it's like pulling teeth - very hard to get them! like HSTB - I can't seem to get enough of them!

Yes, you can only get pne beta task per core/thread. As those finish, you can get another beta to run so having your machines ask for new work as soon as completed work is returned improves your odds. BOINC normally does that but you want to be sure it asks for more work often if it doesn't get new work on returning completed work. Most betas tend to be small so you normally don't get many unless the beta is for a new project like in this case. Getting betas, when they exist, is actually much easier than getting HSTB work.

keithhenry's explanation is correct as well as what to do to better your odds.

A bit of history on why we limit it to one per core. We had some hosts in the past that would be set to download work for 3+ day buffer. With beta tasks being horribly estimated (probably my fault and a degree of unknown new science), this was allowing hosts to download 100's of workunits at a time. This would do 2 things:
1. Slow down the rate at which beta results were returned, if a buffer was filled with beta for 3 days, odds were we wouldn't see it for 4-5 days back or not at all. Which caused us to wait for the resend to be sent out...you can see how this starts to take too long.
2. The amount of different hosts betas were being operated on was not a great selection of machines. If a host downloads 100 of a total of 1000 beta work units, then 1 type/OS was tested on 1/10th of the results.

So the rule of 1 core per result at a time was put into place.

Thanks for your understanding and help on the BETA test!

Looks like it, at least for this batch, my last new was BETA_ SRA1_ 0000000_ Bct-A_ 99321_ 1-- at 1/17/17 00:52:24
I have only had 2 re-sends since then.

If I read the announcement right, there should be another batch of 100,000.
Once these are analysed, more in further rounds.

Paul.

From the first batch I got a total of 451 WUs, of which 444 were valid and 7 are still in PV. Looking really good here...!
