Scientists uncover how Zika causes microcephaly: The findings are key to unraveling the mysteries of why the Zika virus causes birth defects
----------------------------------------A multidisciplinary team from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston has uncovered the mechanisms that the Zika virus uses to alter brain development. These findings are detailed in Stem Cell Reports. There are currently 70 countries and territories reporting active Zika transmissions according to the World Health Organization. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2017/02/170217161023.htm [Edit 1 times, last edit by Jim Slade at Feb 18, 2017 4:21:27 PM] |

Testing for Zika virus: There's an app for that
Add rapid, mobile -testing for Zika and other viruses to the list of things that smartphone technology is making possible. Researchers at Sandia National Laboratories have developed a smartphone-controlled, battery-operated diagnostic device that weighs under a pound, costs as little as $100 and can detect Zika, dengue, and chikungunya within 30 minutes. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2017/03/170320143823.htm |

US enrolls volunteers in large test of possible Zika vaccine
U.S. health officials have begun enrolling volunteers for the critical next-stage testing of an experimental vaccine to protect against Zika. The first volunteer was vaccinated March 29, 2017, at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, as the National Institutes of Health gears up for a two-part study that aims to enroll at least 2,400 people in Texas, Florida, Puerto Rico and five at-risk countries: Brazil, Mexico, Panama, Costa Rica and Peru. Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of NIH's National Insitute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases said that first-stage testing of a so-called DNA vaccine against Zika signaled no side effects concerns, allowing the NIH-created shots to progress to the next stage of testing that will help tell if they really work. http://wtop.com/health-fitness/2017/03/us-enrolls-volunteers-in-large-test-of- possible-zika-vaccine/ |

Zika RNA now found in a second mosquito species
----------------------------------------Zika RNA has been found in Aedes albopictus. That's not the species - known as Aedes aegypti - most often associated with Zika. But scientists have never discounted Aedes albopictus as another possible carrier of the potentially deadly virus. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2017/04/170417100918.htm [Edit 1 times, last edit by Jim Slade at Apr 18, 2017 11:44:29 AM] |
