Queensland researchers have found a way to kill the Zika virus using compounds found in an Australian native plant.
http://thenewdaily.com.au/life/tech/2017/06/0...n-plant-kills-zika-virus/ The compounds halt the virus, which causes birth defects, and stop it replicating without damage to host mammalian cells, QUT scientists say. She didn’t name the plant, presumably for commercial reasons, but said it was fairly common, and its compounds were found to kill 100 per cent of the Zika infection in cells. “It’s also exciting because of the implications of this work for other viruses. Zika, dengue, West Nile, Japanese encephalitis and yellow fever are all from the same family of viruses – flaviviridae.” Etc. |

Infected mozzies against dengue fever! . . .[and Zika]
[Australian] Researchers infected some mosquitoes with wolbachia bacteria, which prevents them transmitting the [dengue] disease. In 2011, these mozzies were released them into the wild [at Cairns in North Queensland, also being trialed in southern Asia], and the infection spread - the wolbachia infection rate in those populations is now 90-95%. And there's been no dengue transmission in those areas. And.. It might also work to prevent transmission of Zika virus. Vaccines protect fetuses from Zika infection, mouse study shows
Mothers vaccinated prior to pregnancy bore no sign of virus A new study in mice shows that females vaccinated before pregnancy and infected with Zika virus while pregnant bear pups who show no trace of the virus. The findings offer the first evidence that an effective vaccine administered prior to pregnancy can protect vulnerable fetuses from Zika infection and resulting injury. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2017/07/170713155034.htm |

One step closer to halting the spread Zika, Dengue, Chikungunya
----------------------------------------Researchers from SUNY Upstate Medical University report that a mathematical model can serve as a guide to make monthly predictions on when people are at the greatest risk for contracting mosquito-borne viruses, such as Dengue, Zika, and Chikungunya, due to climate conditions. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2017/07/170720162604.htm [Edit 1 times, last edit by Jim Slade at Jul 27, 2017 11:03:47 AM] |

Zika has all but disappeared in the Americas. Why?
One. That is the number of locally transmitted Zika cases confirmed in the continental United States this year, as of mid-August. That single case, recorded on 26 July in Hidalgo County in Texas, which borders Mexico, contrasts with hundreds of cases of local transmission last year. https://tinyurl.com/yctygq5m |
