Highest-resolution image ever captured of a virus with an envelope, or protective outer shell. By visualizing the #Zika virus in such detail, researchers may find pockets on its surface where drug molecules could attach.

Re: Interesting News Articles About Zika

Groundbreaking Strides' Made in Zika Vaccine Research
Development of a Zika vaccine is proceeding rapidly, but it still will be years before such a vaccine is available to the public, says the author of a new report on research efforts.

Three leading vaccine candidates are being tested in humans. Two are based on cutting-edge DNA vaccine technology and the third is based on the more standard inactivated virus model, said Dr. Stephen Thomas. He's a professor of infectious disease with the State University of New York Upstate Medical University in Syracuse.

"The pace of R&D for a Zika vaccine is incredibly brisk," Thomas said. "Truly, some groundbreaking strides have been made in very short periods of time."

But Thomas believes it will be at least two to four years before a vaccine has received federal approval and enters mass production.

Dengue fever outbreak stopped by special mosquitoes - Researchers from Monash University
also believe their work could stop mosquito-borne diseases Zika and malaria - 1 August 2018

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-australia-45028733

Australian researchers say for the first time an entire city has been protected from viral disease dengue.

Captive-bred mosquitoes with a naturally occurring bacteria were released in the city of Townsville,
where they mated with local mosquitoes.

By spreading the bacteria Wolbachia, which hinders dengue transmission, the city has been
dengue-free since 2014.

Re: Interesting News Articles About Zika

Why is congenital Zika syndrome asymmetrically distributed among human populations?

Zika virus (ZIKV) is a health burden due to the severe neurological abnormalities that arise after a congenital infection. Although multiple experimental studies have linked ZIKV with neural birth defects, the scientific community has not been able to fully explain why Congenital Zika Syndrome (CZV) was only apparent after the virus entered the Americas, and why these occurrences have an asymmetric geographic distribution. Researcher review the impact of ZKV infection on human populations by exploring evolutionary changes in the virus' genome as well as examing the diverse genetic and environmental cofactors of the human host.
