Zika may be on the doorstep of Africa: http://www.bbc.com/news/health-36343006
Apparently there is an Asian and African strain and A UK researcher said the Zika virus has been circulating at a low level in African countries for more than 50 years, so some of the population may already be immune. "It is likely that the South American, Caribbean and Polynesian populations had no prior immunity to the virus, so a high proportion of people who are bitten by infected mosquitos caught the disease," said Dr Anna Checkley, of the Hospital for Tropical Diseases, University College London Hospitals. |

Concern Zika causes baby eye problems
http://www.bbc.com/news/health-36366946 Unclear if this is stand alone due to zika infection, or a side effect of other zika infectious symptoms. "Researcher Dr Darius Moshfeghi said the next step was to determine the root cause - Zika or microcephaly - to better understand which infants would need eye checks." |

No mention of Alex Perryman or Rutgers. Rutgers is mentioned at the very end of the article (maybe it was added afterwards). "OpenZika is led by the Federal University of Goias in Brazil, with support from the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation. Scientists at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School are also taking part." Zika's potential threat to world blood supply deserves study and action
Blood safety researchers say it is highly likely that the mosquito-borne Zika virus can be transmitted through blood transfusions and are calling for an evidence-based approach to protecting the blood supply from the threat of Zika virus according to experts. The researchers say among several possible stops that could be taken to mitigate safety concerns: deferring blood donors who have symptoms of the infection, developing better blood screening tests, and finding ways to reduce the pathogen. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2016/06/160614133615.htm |
