Re: Points per watt: Lets try an update

Now it has, after exiting the browser, which clears the cache :D

An I7-4770K entry doing 6K PPD, not understanding. Is this 24/7 WCG only? Mine does 13K PPD at 1200MHZ at this moment [W8-64 FAHV only]. When running at 3.7 [it wont go higher on 8 cores], it makes 38-40K PPD.

Re: Points per watt: Lets try an update

Those figures are BOINC credits, not WCG ones.

Re: Points per watt: Lets try an update

So CPD ;>) (Maybe OldChap would consider to change the headers to make it unambiguous... thought the original OP explained the distinction, but maybe it was in another thread)

Re: Points per watt: Lets try an update

Nice thread idea. Glad to see some of my results thrown in there from the TPU thread :)

Re: Points per watt: Lets try an update

A couple of corrections only recently, but it does take a laptop to the top of the mixed results

Re: Points per watt: Lets try an update

While the idea is good, I think there should be more fields to specify which project combinations you are running.

I say that because it would seem different projects have different PPD outputs (and possibly PPW?). In an experiment I running, after 6 days of 24/7 work on with 6 cores dedicated exclusively to Boinc (8 core machine, I used Process Lasso to make sure nothing would compete with WCG for CPU resources), MCM gave me 190 points per hour as credit (185 claimed), while CEP gave me 214 PPH (212 claimed). Just on the projects alone, that's almost a 10% difference in credit, as far as run time goes.

Unfortunately, there were no W measurements, so the power consumption might offset that credit difference in a PPW calculation. But it's also very possible that it doesn't, as well as it is possible that it just accentuates it even further.

Re: Points per watt: Lets try an update

I understand what you are saying and if this were a full on scientific study there would certainly be a requirement for comparison of projects in more detail, alas this is not. It sets out to highlight the cost of running a given cruncher and a general Idea of how many points per day such a machine will be producing.

Sekerob posted above his findings on running a certain cpu at stock speed and lower and has intimated that ppd is reasonably proportional to power draw. I have observed similar performance and results on my rigs too.

In view of the fact that points are seemingly not awarded in a truly scientific manner this must remain just a guide for those enquiring minds considering the efficiency of their efforts when crunching.

Re: Points per watt: Lets try an update

Thanks for additions VCD683S

I find it interesting that laptop psu's are seemingly very efficient these days. I did not expect this.
