Re: Just to unintuitive to participate

Today, people don't donate!
They see everything through EXPENSES...and running BOINC on their computer cost 20% more electricity...which coits 20% more money!

Today people are too obsessed to have more, not to give more!
just so you know, I am offended by your generalization devilish

Why?

You give so much through WCG...and probably to some other charity also...there are not much of us which give back to the ones who need & don't have!
cool

I am running things here for a very specific reason. I don't mind a little low priority work on the computer because the expense has a DIRECT CONTRIBUTION to science.

I am not interested in sending a contribution in the mail, just so a charity can send more mail asking for more contributions. I don't see any benefit, except for maybe a paid executive staff. Some just say they are funding education about a problem, which doesn't actually solve anything.

Re: Just to unintuitive to participate

Being a board member of a not-for-profit, I can certainly contest to retsof's point of view. NonProfits certainly pay attention to whom the big donors are and tend to all flock to them. This is a big reason why more an more donors are requesting to be anonymous. The ones that are smart enough not to take credit tend to be the ones that continue their efforts. The ones that feel they need acknowledged tend to get bombarded with requests.

One of the things I have received feedback on from members that have reduced or retired has been deadlines. For an app that is supposed to be spare cpu cycles, many of the DC projects demand requirements that involve much more than general idle time. This need for quick returns doesn't really fit the spare cycles of the typical PC user behavior.

Many users also get burned out because there is little interaction with them. Again, as a board member I have found that merely walking around and thanking donors for their contribution makes a world of difference. Standing on a pedestal and thanking them all in a general non-personal way doesn't quite do the trick. That direct contact is what hits home. I don't see many DC projects giving their donors much attention.

WCG is unique in that it isn't the scientists that have little experience in such things. It is an organization that handles a lot of the PR for them. They have the tools to be able to reach out. Though I'm sure it falls under the "we will add it to the list of things to get around to" or the "it just isn't a highest priority with our limited resources" lists. I know they have done a lot more with "informing" its users and to also give small updates to remind them of their last checkin, but it really seems very mechanical or robotic. The impression from the emails do not feel personal in any way to me.

Re: Just to unintuitive to participate

There are practical limits to how much attention you give when you have 60k or 70k active members. In a situation like that you have to create self-reinforcing structures that do the job for you.

One way to do that is to create a community and encourage people to participate in that community.

For example, some teams here provide that sort of support and reinforcement. But the number of members those teams aren't significant. They are probably very significant in terms of amount of cpu cycles that are contributed but not in terms of the absolute number of people.

The objective should be to help everyone feel like they're part of the WCG team, regardless of whether or not they belong to a team group here. But that requires at least a couple of people on staff who are dedicated to this - not to mention better forum software that would help to create these connections between users.

Unfortunately, IBM isn't doing very well financially at this point and although I suspect that they will be very successful eventually with their Watson and cloud initiatives, that won't happen for a few more years at least. In the meantime, the number of users will continue on its downward trajectory.

The only way WCG will get more resources from IBM in this environment is if they can see a method for using WCG to help their bottom line. And although there are certainly ways that WCG could be leveraged to serve that end, IBM seems unwilling and unable to do that. It's surprising that they show such a lack of imagination in ways like this but such a surplus in others.

Re: Just to unintuitive to participate

The OP May have given up on this thread, but one thing that was said in the first post was that WCG was not working with Last Pass, a popular password organizer.
To throw my hat into this ring of fire, I am using Last Pass, and it works as expected with WCG. The BOINC client itself of course does not need a password entered to run. The website does need a log in.
I have mine set to 'Auto Login' and it does just that. Once I click the bookmark and the browser opens the WCG website, I am greeted with the "My Grid' Page, and logged in.

Last Pass is an excellent way to generate and use safe an secure passwords across all website logins, and i use it to make personal secure notes for future reference when needed.

Re: Just to unintuitive to participate

Got a mail from LastPass and after due diligence on where the links would lead me [are they really the genuine article... hover, not click , until hovering becomes dangerous too], went to the LP site to read more on a breach they had: https://blog.lastpass.com/2015/06/lastpass-security-notice.html/
