Just realized there's no way to start a new list of words.
----------------------------------------You start out with a list of words containing at least four letters and at most eight letters like this: aDage bAlky aNnum cAnal eErie Vertical words used: danae Each word must have the same number of letters. The number of words must match the number of letters in each word. The list of words must spell out a word vertically, up or down, using the letters in the same position of each word. Highlight the vertical word using caps, Add the new vertical word to the list of used vertical words. Then you can do one of two things. 1. Swap two and only two words around to spell at least one word vertically up or down using the letters in the same position of each word where the vertical word, regardless of direction, has not been used previously for the list of words. 2. Substitute another word with the same number of letters for one already there that spells at least one word vertically up or down using the letters in the same position of each word - but this must be done in place, a direct substitution and you can't move any of the other words. The vertical word must be unused for the list of words before the substitution Once neither 1 nor 2 are possible without repeating a used vertical word, you may start over with a new list of words. |

What happens if no one finds a vertical word with option 1 and 2?

I'm not sure it would be possible to never find a word via substitution (option 2). But if you couldn't find a word that would give you a vertical word just by substitution, we could do a substitution and swap. In that case it's really hard to imagine you could not find one that would work but that's just my impression - I can't prove that.
----------------------------------------As for starting a new list of words, maybe we could do that whenever someone finds 2 vertical words in one move. Then their prize would be getting to select the new list. I guess the only way to find out would be to give it a try but I'm certainly open to other suggestions. I don't want to be the game master here by any means, even in terms of setting rules. So whatever generates a consensus is fine with me ![]() ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by twilyth at May 21, 2014 6:55:56 AM] |

But who will be the gamemaster then? I don't want to either, but I will try playing it if someone starts it. I still wonder how many are interested though, only two of us replied so far.
Folks, please post and say what you think, and twilyth or anyone: keep the ideas coming. |

The problem with having the same number of words and letters is that it becomes more complex to find solutions.
----------------------------------------I picked 4 letter words vertically since the game we have going now based on that principle seems to popular. But however many letters you want to have vertically, I think the length of the other words (horizontally) should be longer to increase the chances of being able to find a vertical word. But the fact that not many seem interested in this seems like a valid point. I'd be happy to help get the game started but I think it should be self-supporting and not really require anyone to oversee it. But again, there doesn't really seem to be much interest so maybe we should forget it completely. I'm not sure there is much point with just 4 or 5 players. ![]() ![]() |

Interest in terms of posts here doesn't necessarily equal the level of interest in a game like this. The new four letter word game is proving more popular than hexagame as it's much simpler and quicker. I tend to see an acrostic word game like this being the most challenging of the three. Clearly, too challenging would not be good but a modification or two in the beginning could address that if that proves to be the case. I'll think on this more and see if I can refine the idea to have a good balance.

It might be better to keep this at four letter words.
I can't find an answer to the game right now at five letters. |
