Hi all,
I'm wanting to add another computer to the grid but wanting to get something that is not too expensive to build, cheap to run, but more importantly, still have a very good output. Am I asking for the impossible? Do you have any experience/recommendations about how to go about this? |

How expensive are we talking? $500, $1000, $1500? I'm not an expert, but I know of some resources.
http://www.logicalincrements.com/ This website has good builds for any budget. The Good, Very Good, and Great tiers generally provide the best bang for your buck. reddit.com/r/buildapc is also another great resource. The community there can help answer questions and review your hardware choices. Even though WCG doesn't have any GPU projects right now, you could still choose another great BOINC GPU project. |

I have been building 4 core systems with AMD APUs. The A8-5500's are returning ~14,000 points per day. The built in graphics on the chip provide for GPU processing when the next GPU project comes around. This is an inexpensive build within a 65 watt CPU envelope. I will be building an additional unit with an A10-5700 by the end of this month. Since these units have been going into other peoples homes, I have minimized the power consumption.
----------------------------------------The 95 watt Kaveri A10-7850k with its 12 "compute cores" would be an interesting build. “Where an excess of power prevails, property of no sort is duly respected. It depends, do you want a ready made system or are you comfortable putting one together with parts?
----------------------------------------All your really need for a dedicated cruncher is CPU/motherboard, case, power supply, RAM, and HD/SSD. Here is what I would use: Fx-8350 or i7-4770k Small SSD drive 32 or 64 is plenty Linux 64 bit (free) 80+ power supply Any cheap motherboard and case All this should run you around $500-600 us. |

I'm happy to build myself. I'm looking around the $500 USD (£300 UK) mark - but I'll keep looking. Thanks for your suggestions.
