idea for a word game - let me know what you think
----------------------------------------You start out with 4 5 or 6 letter words like this adage balky canal eerie Then you can do one of 2 things. 1. swap 2 and only 2 words around to spell at least one 4 letter word vertically (either going up or down - down is preferable but not required). 2. Substitute another 5 letter word for one already there - but this must be done in place, a direct substitution and you can't move any of the other words. We should be able to go a few rounds just rearranging the word order but eventually you would be forced to use a new 5 letter word. Doing it this way means you shouldn't have to keep track of duplicate words for more than a few rounds I'm guessing. Once a new word is substituted, the slate is wiped clean and all words are fair game again. The new word only has to generate one vertical word but has to be a real word. You would do either a type 1 or type 2 rearrangement and then say which word you think you've created. The example above I don't think can create any vertical words regardless of arrangement. You will need to post the words using the courier font. If you're not sure how to do that, just ask. It's easy. You can use an anagram generator to check for possible words from 4 letters pretty easily. You can get lists of 5 letter words from onelook dictionary by typing in 5 question marks. For example, typing in ????q will give you all 5 letter words ending in q edit: I'm wondering if we should permit words on the 4, 4 letter diagonals as well ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by twilyth at May 19, 2014 10:14:17 PM] |

Seems a little difficult, in the sample words above I can't form a word with either of the two options. What happens then?
Diagonal words are more difficult, I would stick to vertical words. Sounds like a difficult game overall, but then the Hexagame poetry is even harder and people do play it. I think a few people would indeed try it. About the courier font, I don't know how to use it, and many others may not know. I would go ahead and explain how you do it. |

For your word list, just highlight all of the words and from the font drop down list, select courier. That's it. Courier doesn't use proportional spacing so it makes it easy to read columns. I would probably increase the font size too (use the appropriate drop down list).
----------------------------------------It is more difficult so you make be right about it being less appealing. I'll leave the idea and implementation to anyone here who feels like pursuing it. If no one does, that's cool. It was just an idea. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

It could take longer to play than the current Hexagame, which is more interesting than I thought it would be. The 4 letter word game is Fast, though I do not look past the last few posts for duplicates.

btw, in the example I gave, since you can't create any new words by moving the old ones around, you would go with option 2 and substitute a word for one of the 4.

So if you substitute one of the words you're not required to form a vertical word?

No. That is, at least in theory, the "fun" part - selecting a word that would work.
----------------------------------------That's why I gave the link to onelook.com. It lets you put in wild cards to find a word that works. So in my example, you could substitute lamas for canal to spell able in the first column vertically. We can make it even easier by letting you substitute a word AND swap that new word with an old one., ![]() ![]() |

So I guess no one is interested in this - even with modifications?
----------------------------------------If anyone else has ideas on how to make this fun, please contribute to the discussion. Thanks. ![]() ![]() |

Just a thought:
----------------------------------------You start out with a list of words containing at least four letters and at most eight letters like this: aDage bAlky aNnum cAnal eErie Each word must have the same number of letters. The number of words must match the number of letters in each word. The list of words must spell out a word vertically, up or down, using the letters in the same position of each word. Highlight the vertical word using caps, Then you can do one of two things. 1. Swap two and only two words around to spell at least one word vertically up or down using the letters in the same position of each word where the vertical word, regardless of direction, has not been used previously for the list of words. 2. When 1 is not possible without repeating a previous vertical word regardless of direction, substitute another word with the same number of letters for one already there that spells at least one word vertically up or down using the letters in the same position of each word - but this must be done in place, a direct substitution and you can't move any of the other words. The vertical word must be unused for the list of words before the substitution but resets the list of used vertical words. Note: I can't decide whether to include or exclude the part in bold in 2. Including makes things more challanging but maybe too much so I'm inclined to exclude it. |
