I got partially edited out for expressing myself in a decent and polite manner, but that's not Forum language appropriated, THATS BS!, and that's it, I'm done with my participation with WCG and you can thank the moderator that is clueless in free speech. I'll uninstall BOINC and delete all WCG data, enjoy the stupid sensorship.

Sad to lose you after all these years, Saul, but the idea is to enjoy your life while doing others some good. Just a reminder - there are a lot of distributed computing projects that are listed at http://www.distributedcomputing.info/projects.html

Yes you should be sad because I answered to your threat in a very rational way and at the seems you or someone else reported me when I clarified how wrong were your point of view was and how I would reply in kind to a harsh reply, but intolerant and stupid people moderating this forum, choose not to let me express myself.
----------------------------------------I got a good taste of what distributed computing actually really is with WCG and it can go to *** until I know it'll actually make some good and not just fill up some rich rat pockets and the censorship morons working for them in Forums like this and *** simple doesn't understand very well that the world out there isn't just what it has to be followed but changed by people and question everything, *** This is my last post. *edited to appropriate forum language - ErikaT & TKH [Edit 4 times, last edit by TKH at Mar 3, 2014 3:40:39 PM] |

Saul nobody reported you,
----------------------------------------I've been hit with the censor before, she reads too much LOL. My 2 cents, yeah some company is gonna make money, and some kids will have a cure/treatment. That's the way of the world, don't let the door hit you on the A$$ ![]() |

Any estimate on the amount of person-hours (or dollars) saved in the lab by first testing the ~3 million compounds on WCG? Just curious, and this is a fantastic update.

Excellent news ! So encouraging.
Remember Saul, if these compounds do prove useful in producing useable drugs ? Given time, generic equivalents will become available. |

Saul, I don't know, whether you will still read this but the way, I see it, one has to separate politics and science if one decided to participate in distributed computing projects. For me it doesn't really matter, who will profit from these new drugs as long as new drugs are actually developed to cure diseases. And if WCG can accelerate the development of new cures for various diseases then that's enough for me to participate. We are not living in a completely dystopian world ala "Blade Runner", where large mega-corporations control everything. The truth is that even mega-corporations cannot totally control the flow of information in a way that would only serve their interests. It's impossible. This means that as long as the "formula" for a cure for a disease is publicly known - and I think that this is always the case with WCG? - anyone can try to produce that cure, using the formula. Given enough time even large corporations eventually face a big enough competition from other corporation to make the price for a cure drop.
As about governments ... Yes, it's unfortunate that the computing powers of supercomputers, like IBM Sequoia are used mostly for the simulation of atomic explosions - quote from Wikipedia: "Sequoia will be used primarily for nuclear weapons simulation, replacing the current Blue Gene/L and ASC Purple supercomputers at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Sequoia will also be available for scientific purposes such as astronomy, energy, lattice QCD, study of the human genome, and climate change." But this is, why projects like WCG are so important! I'm sure that nobody would donate their spare computing time for the simulation of atomic explosions (unless of course a big asteroid is heading for Earth and there isn't enough time to stop it by other means). In other words if governments are for some strange reason unable to use their supercomputers, which are partically funded by taxpayers, for truely humanitarian projects like the fight against childhood cancers then the peoples of Earth themselves have to do that FOR themselves and not their governments. (Note that I make a difference between the people, working for a government and a government as a political entity.). At least this is, why I participated in the WCG. (And who knows, maybe I will participate again in the WCG in the near future.) Although I wonder, whether a truely community financed "open-source"-drug without the involvement of the pharma-industry can be produced by extensive use of world-wide crowdfunding campaigns? Perhaps something like a "World Funding Grid"? |

Medical tests are overpriced because of companies owning them. so in truth, mcm will be non-profit. Maybe this project wasn't but that's not going to be true for mcm. so... please dont go. I was looking for a good use for my radeon 7950 but poem was no longer doing gpu tasks. folding.stanford.edu is, im glad I can finally use my graphics card while browsing :) |
