Re: Statistics Not Running

I have not attempted to run two different instances of BOINC on the same computer. There are a few issues with this type of setup that does not support this.

Generally what happens is when you install BOINC it creates a new user/group called boinc_users/boinc_admins. This will install the BOINC agent in C:\Program Files\BOINC and use a data directory of C:\ProgramData\BOINC. Since these will be the same user/group for both attempted installs, you might just be writing the same files over each other. Next is the service style of install, where it will run even when not logged in. Also, since it will only be running when you're logged in, you would in essence be competing for CPU time to complete tasks by the deadline. Also, Windows can allow both users to be technically logged into the computer at the same time, which would then strain some of your computer resources like memory of the system.

Syrina, what I are you trying to accomplish with this setup? Is it:
A. To allow your WCG member name to get stats while you physically use the machine? And get WCG stats for your friend when she is only logged into the machine?
B. Have BOINC contribute any time the machine is powered on to get full use of the machine?

If your goal is A, then I would not attempt this as there are various technical hurdles that would have to be crossed and understood.

If your goal is B, then you might need to uninstall the agent completely from both your account and your friends. Then reinstalling the agent and downloading it from here: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php v7.2.39 is the latest stable release from Berkeley. When you reinstall the agent, have it install as a service and allow all users access to it. This way you can view what is going on with the agent while you use your friends computer.

Thanks,
-Uplinger

smile Re: Statistics Not Running

Uplinger, thank you so much for helping me. I am not sure I understand B, so I will tell you, in as few words as possible, exactly what I am trying to do.

Maddy, my friend, owns the computer. She is attempting to share her computer with me, to, 1. help me because we are so anxious to help benefit the world, and 2. to help me make points in our community company.

Therefore, if that will work, and I read that you could have several users on one computer, then I will uninstall the additional updates that I don't need, or all of them, just leaving 7.2.39, or re-installing it, according to your instructions.

If that will help the two of us run on the same computer, her using the computer, and mine just running, then that is great. If I am hurting her ability to do great things, then I will just not be on here. No problem.

If I uninstall all of the updates, then use the link you gave me to re-install, do I need to do that once, on the computer, or do I need to do it on each log in, ie, hers and then mine? Do I still click the 'Download' on the site to the extreme right of the page, or not?

Please give me specific instructions, if the two of us are able to run, in the background, at the same time, and not interfere with the other. She is the only one, who will be using the computer for other things, of course.

Thanks and I look forward to your reply. Syrina (and Maddy)

Re: Statistics Not Running

Sorry Syrina, but, as Keith explained, although Windows allows multi-users on a single PC, Boinc does not allow more than one user due to the way it operates. As the PC is Maddys' then she should be the one to run Boinc, if you want to run boinc you would have to have your own PC sad

Re: Statistics Not Running

Explain to the readers this option for config:

<allow_multiple_clients>0|1</allow_multiple_clients>
allow multiple BOINC clients to run on a single host. Each must run in a different data directory.

No version number is given as from when, but am sure the patina covered WCG version can not.

Re: Statistics Not Running

One possible way for them to both participate using one machine would be to have two separate OS's configured in a dual boot mode. This may be overly complicated, but would allow both people to use the machine ( separately of course) and allow for two instances of BOINC to run totally separately - but not at the same time. Possible - yes, but not very practical.
Cheers

Uplinger, there have been several crunchers replying to my message, which I do appreciate, but because you are the tech, who answered me, explaining more than any other, I would appreciate a response from you.
