wow .. you really have caught the crunching bug Stefan ![]() Well, I really have ![]() Was doing seti@home before as I really hate idle systems but now I can keep my systems busy AND helping medical research (a field I work in). But actually these tests were done primarily because I was curious as everybody else how good or bad HTT really works for certain specialized tasks. It seems that crunching (benchmark-like application) benefits very much -- other apps might only see a smaller benefit. What I was able to prove is that even (or especially?) for a very CPU intensive task like the WCG client HTT is MUCH more than a marketing trick of Intel -- it really works (and better than I ever expected). Best, Stefan. |

I was wondering if there is anyone from Birmingham UK If so, welcome to a great cause We are looking for all Uk Members to join the European Grid Come and help us boost our points as we are currently 19th and would like to move further up the rankings Looking forward to welcoming new members to our Team Hi Graham, i'm in manchester and just joined up to this grid, i'm interested in joining your team, let me know if you're interested and whats required... Hi wchaplinWhen I first joined the World Community Grid, I was recruiting members for European Grid Due to the exhuberance and dedication of David Autumns, Dave Bell, Lawrence Hardin, and MLCBA being the founder members of MYOnlineTeam, I could not resist joining this enthusiastic bunch, to help, by contributing to their efforts This was around December last year and we have since, attracted quite a few members from the UK, including one from Manchester We are now over 200 strong and currently in 3rd place overall on the World Community Grid I had an article printed on the BBC Website in February of this year and we had quite a few UK residents join us Here is the link: PCs do thousands of years of work You are more than welcome to join us at MyOnlineTeam and we would be delighted to have another Mancunian in the ranks Here is the link to join our team: Click here to Join MOT Click here to visit our Website. If you decide to join us, we look forward to giving you our usual big welcome [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Sep 21, 2005 11:02:04 AM] |

I did seti@home for a while myself ..
Although they had some good ideas to keep members motivated and draw new members (especially kids with the various add ons) .. David Autumns & Graham converted me to the WCG As SETI has not managed to find any little green men in 30 years or so of listening, I guess it makes sense to contribute to a cause like WCG so that cures may be found for diseases to enable us (humnas) to be around long enough to look for little green men ![]() |

Hiya Stefan
----------------------------------------Some very intresting work you've been doing. I was wondering if you would be able to help! Dave our magic team captain has been giving me a run for my money thankfully for me he went on holiday and now I've had a chance to get back on top of him (so to speak). I fear however this is only a short term victory and I doubt I'll be dancing in the streets for much longer with out your help! I finally commited to buying a AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 3800 (MSI K8N SLi nForce 4) system which hopefully I will be building up in the next few weeks. I have a couple of raptors in my current system which I'm thinking dont need raiding and have ordered some more memory and a SATAII drive. Now I'm thinking about running maybe the Windows XP 64-bit pro platform with Microsoft Virtual PC which I've been using for quite a while (2003 edition SP2) which i have licences for so I was thinking about following in your wisdom and creating 3 virtual clients running windows xp or 2k and I'm hoping that the dual core processor will help to give processing time to both my 64-bit core plus split across the 3 virtual clients. sharing 2gb between them. Now I'm not sure if this will have the same effect as the Intel HTT solution I'm hoping so otherwise I just have a very powerful standalone workstation. I do have copies of windows 2003 server (non 64-bit version) just want to pack a punch and some how hold of dave and his 200 nForces 2's with two 64-bit powerhouses. Am I just dreaming or should this be a challange to research into this for the rest of the gang? Any comments ideas suggestions! Anything really which isnt flaming! Thanks Stefan |

Hi Jonathon!
I was wondering if you would be able to help! I'm always glad to help a member of the Brutus Club to crunch David ![]() First of all you have to know that the easiest way to stay ahead of him is sending him a new screwdriver and some reason to use it on his mobo; maybe a CPU cooler (can be broken, he kills the mobo before he notices). Sorry, couldn't resist I finally commited to buying a AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 3800 (MSI K8N SLi nForce 4) system which hopefully I will be building up in the next few weeks. Is this a board with two Dual-Core CPUs or only one? If it's two of them (so actually you have four CPUs) then of course you run four clients. And yes, it makes sense to run only three virtual machines then (with one client in each guest OS) and run the fourth client on the host OS. If it's only one Dual-Core CPU then run only two clients -- one virtual machine with one client plus a second client in the host OS. Now I'm thinking about running maybe the Windows XP 64-bit pro platform with Microsoft Virtual PC which I've been using for quite a while As I don't know VirtualPC very good (just used it last week on my boss' Mac, you can get VirtualPC for Macintosh) and know nothing about the XP-64 I don't know if VirtualPC runs on XP-64. All I know is that XP-64 has a problem with drivers as you can't use XP-32 drivers. If you find out that all hardware in that machine comes with XP-64 drivers and all your software (incl. Virtual-PC) runs on XP-64 then go ahead -- otherwise stay with XP-32 -- as far as I know it supports up to 4 CPUs (not sure). sharing 2gb between them. If I would buy today I would buy 4GB. If you develop database resp. dynamic web applications then see if you can afford the extra RAM. This machine will serve you a long time and it can replace all your servers. Now I'm not sure if this will have the same effect as the Intel HTT solution I'm hoping so otherwise I just have a very powerful standalone workstation. Dual-core is even more powerful than HTT as in dual-core EVERY ressource of the CPU is duplicated (so it's really 2 CPUs). There should be no difference to a Dual-CPU so actually a mobo with 2 Dual-Core CPUs is a real Quad-CPU system. With one difference: some software makers count a Dual-core CPU as only one CPU. This can make quite a price difference when you buy software that is paid per CPU! Bottom line: if the OS you choose supports all your Dual-Core CPUs and all your other hardware and you can run VirtualPC under that OS -- yes, then you will get +2500 points per 24h (I guess your CPUs are faster than my 2.8 GHz Intels???). Best, Stefan. |

Oh no now I'm scared
---------------------------------------- Jonathon and Stefan, together, ganging up on me Buckshot I think I've finally convinced Mrs Autumns that the Windows Media Centre(er) is a good idea. I might have to have to take a look at Socket 939 and nForce4 ![]() |

Thanks for choosing to crunch with the MOT crew.
----------------------------------------Hopefully you will bring some decorum to our Team Thread It's been a bit brutal around here recently They're a great bunch really - a top choice. It's now a tradition for me to say "Your member pages are now online" and the white boxes will be replaced by the start of your MOT points graphs after 00:45 GMT/UTC. Any extra info you would like the world to see on your member profile page please drop me an email to the address that can be found on the teams website (link below). We'd like to see those white with red ? flags be replaced with flags from every nation blowing in the internet breeze. I see Jessica already has 2 device installs - beware crunching for the World Community Grid is addictive (btw has anyone heard from Frans recently?) Roll on tonight's stats update we might get a bit of a rebound after yesterday's Grid outage Need to look into UDmon Thanks to you both for joining our little BIG team as we crunch through those work units for Richard Bonneau at the ISB.
