u can select that only GPU computing is send to ur computers...so only GPU will crunch with sthg like 0,0043% of CPUs one core used for GPU instructions.... ;)

Looks like Folding@home is doing a way better job of taking advantage of GPU's. The lack of GPU exploitation is basically an abandoning of a massive amount of computation power that could be put to good use on WCG. At this point WCG seems to be fading in the twilight - no new projects - no gpu support. It's sad. I've been here ten years and right it seems to be it's lowest point.

.....and in 10 years you still have not learnt that WCG do not provide the projects it is outside bodies who obviously cannot be bothered to write GPU projects.

Well, on the other hand if (theoretically) the existing projects would be ported to GPU, currently there would be nothing left to crunch, since all would be already completed ;)

Hello Mumak
----------------------------------------I can not share this opinion, alone in the project FightAIDS@Home would be worth a port. It is expected for about 9 years and only about 500 million results have been achieved so far. In an article by a scientist of "FightAIDS@Home", I've read that there are up to approximately 7 billion combinations that can be validated. Even with GPU assistance, it would take probably years rather than it now looks like decades. Nothing against WCG but there's more than enough work for the distributed computing. ![]() ![]() |

I guess it was just a joke
---------------------------------------- While I tend to agree with your opinion, there are lot of sideways in it. I believe the scientists know the best what pace of progress is optimal for them. They are learning during this process and incorporate such learning into it (see the latest paper from FAAH scientists) and making adjustments/changes for future analyses. To be able to do this, there must be somebody who will proceed the data we are sending back and who will find relevant insights from them. Now, imagine the situation you are suggesting. We crungers would already sent back to scientists all results, but they would proceeded in their own pace. Suddenly they would discover what they discovered now ad would realize that the rest of results (7 giga combinations) are useless and have to be crunched again. I would be disappointed because my (our) effort (and money) would went to trash bin, wouldn't you? Let's do our part of this work and leave the decisions on more proper part of this work Cheers ![]() ETA: and no, I don't see there's more than enough work for the distributed computing I would take part in with such effort as for projects in WCG. But this is not important at all. ![]() Crunching@Home since January 13 2000. Shrubbing@Home since January 5 2006 ![]() [Edit 2 times, last edit by branjo at Jun 25, 2014 10:47:27 AM] |

What do you mean it "You think it was a joke"?
----------------------------------------A Cruncher had asked whether enough work for FightAIDS@Home exists to make even a badge. And the scientists then gave this response is still enough work there. And yes it's here (partly I think) try and error principle there is research. This means also that much waste accumulates. But it must be sorted out just to get results! What do you mean it "You think it was a joke"? ... I think Mumak tried to put the conversation into the lighter mode and make a joke in his/her post (see ";)" at the end of it). ![]() Crunching@Home since January 13 2000. Shrubbing@Home since January 5 2006 ![]() |
