IBM's Watson can improve cancer treatment through better gene targeting
IBM's Watson beat real-life contestants on Jeopardy. Now researchers are hoping this icon of artificial intelligence will help people with cancer win as well by providing a rapid, comprehensive report of the genetic mutations at the root of their specific disease and the therapies that target them. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2017/08/170807110400.htm ![]() |

How Can You Take Part in Clinical Research? Looking Beyond in "First Human"
For a remarkable journey through the front lines of clinical research, I'd like to invite you to join me in viewing First in Human, which premieres August 10, 2017, at 9:00 P.M. on the Discovery Channel. This three-part docuseries to be aired August 10, 17, and 24, provides an unprecedented look inside the NIH Clinical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, following four of the many brave patients who've volunteered to take part in the clinical trials that are so essential to medical breakthroughs. https://directorsblog.nih.gov/2017/08/10/how-...first-in-human/#more-8833 ![]() |

My dad was recently diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer. He's starting treatment with the most aggressive chemo (FOLFIRINOX - thanks to his good performance status). Found a trial (in clinicaltrials.gov) trying Losartan along with FOLFIRINOX (plus radiation) for Pancreatic Cancer patients (reason being that Losartan being an angiotensin inhibitor can loosen up tumor vessel making the anti-cancer drugs reach them better). I'll show him the trial, he'll probably want to "join in". Thanks for this info! ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Chilean at Aug 12, 2017 2:14:15 AM] |

Breast cancer drug treats children's brain cancer.
----------------------------------------An international team of researchers has found a drug previously approved to treat breast cancer could also be used to shrink medulloblastoma, a common form of childhood brain tumour. The discovery, made by The University of Queensland’s Institute for Molecular Bioscience and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, has led to a clinical trial using the drug palbociclib to treat children with medulloblastoma, the most common malignant brain tumour found in children. “We expected that palbociclib would arrest the growth of medulloblastoma, but we were stunned to find that it went a step further and actually shrank the tumours to a size where survival is possible.” https://www.uq.edu.au/news/article/2017/08/po...ncer-drug-shrinks-tumours [Edit 1 times, last edit by l_mckeon at Aug 13, 2017 11:46:00 PM] |

West Australian researcher finds that an extract of the common Feverfew Daisy slows (but does not stop) the spread of aggressive prostate cancer in mice.
It could be years before this is fully tested in humans, but feverfew is readily available as a supplement for those who want to risk it, being typically used to treat migraines. |

FDA announces first US gene therapy approved for cancer treatment
The US Food and Drug Administration approved a new leukemia treatment, which the agency considers the first gene therapy it has cleared to hit the market in the United States. The treatment is called Kymriah. Each dose of Kymriah contains a patient's own immune cells, which are sent to a lab to be genetically modified using a virus. This therapy - known as chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy, or CAR-T-- gives the cells the ability to recognize and kill the source of cancer. http://www.cnn.com/2017/08/30/health/fda-first-gene-therapy-leukemia/index.html ![]() |

It's in the European news too, 475,000 USD per treatment... Better sell your house, if you have one, and cash your pension and take the children's college tuition too. No cure, no pay.... how uplifting.
