"Removing lymph nodes (axillary dissection) was considered the norm for breast cancer treatment for decades, until a controversial trial proved that women did not need to undergo the invasive surgery."
----------------------------------------Results of a 10 year survival study of women with early stage breast cancer treated with a lumpectomy and radiation shows no advantage to removing lymph nodes. Followup study on women with later stage cancer and full mastectomy is in progress. This result may also apply to some treatments for metastasized melanoma but studies are incomplete. http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/...-cancer-treatment/8956328 [Edit 1 times, last edit by l_mckeon at Sep 24, 2017 11:52:46 PM] |

A research study available in the Wiley Online Library (not paywalled).
----------------------------------------http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/cncr.30879/full "Cannabis use among patients at a comprehensive cancer center in a state with legalized medicinal and recreational use" "Cannabis is purported to alleviate symptoms related to cancer treatment, although the patterns of use among cancer patients are not well known. This study was designed to determine the prevalence and methods of use among cancer patients, the perceived benefits, and the sources of information in a state with legalized cannabis." I think that it was a novel approached how researchers obtained patients' urine sample to analyze for THC. I also like the way usage is broken down by type of cancer. Precision Oncology: The Road Ahead; Trends in Molecular Medicine Genomics-driven cancer therapy benefits a subset of patients, although there are clear shortcomings to this approach. Using genomics as a single biomarker to inform therapy is insufficient to comprehensively predict efficient therapeutic approaches. By providing information about active pathways, the inclusion of transcriptomic data reveals a more comprehensive and thus, accurate molecular profile, which likely improves the choice of therapy. http://www.cell.com/trends/molecular-medicne/fulltext/S1471-4914(17)30143-0 ![]() |
