Re: New Design - Observations and Notes

Just noticed that when the stats are being updated and you get the XX minutes screen, the old menu displays (no utility bar).

Even before these website changes, that page was outdated.

Did notice that if you now sign in whilst on the forums, you stay on the forums and don't get transported to My Contributions (fka My Grid). That request was ticked off in green.

Re: New Design - Observations and Notes

this page lasts for 10 minutes, and it lacks friendly links to newcomers

Message

The page you requested is currently unavailable because the statistics are being updated.

The statistics update will finish in about 5 minutes 30 seconds.

Re: New Design - Observations and Notes

Maybe some minor design things to consider:
(1) During statistics update, you cannot open the forum page in a new tab via center mouse button click, at least in my Firefox browsers. It opens a blank page titled javascript:redirectToForums(); No big deal though, the button works with a left click. This has already been the case before the redesign.
(2) Same statistic update page: This is still old design. My Contribution is called My Grid and the header links (Login, Join, Forum, Help, Settings, Download) are missing. Sorry, I just noticed that the previous posts already pointed this one out.
(3) Again during statistics update: Opening https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/ (didn't check for http) and logging in via the top left log in button, the link still says log in, nothing indicates that i already am logged in.
(4) Link to Device Profiles would be nice to have in the left menu bar.

Re: New Design - Observations and Notes

Getting all corners of WCG speak the same language is a thing hard to do, specially if you make changes to a larger body. Today received varying titled email announcements on MCM [some test accounts got a different one], and it tells of the new MCM and at the bottom right, where it says to be needing 9 more days for the MCM gold badge it's got "Go to My Statistics >>" at left. Next letter maybe "Go to My Contributions >>" :D

Re: New Design - Observations and Notes

The version of the WCG email I received has, bottom left

My Statistics

Registered: November 30, 2011

Run Time: 3,760 days

Points: 10,351,599

Results: 23,150

Last Result: November 25, 2013
Go to My Statistics >>

and, bottom right
jonnieb-uk, you are about 7 days away from earning your Silver badge for Mapping Cancer Markers!

Go Check Your Status>>

Both links are to "My Statistics"

Seems to me a duplication and/or a waste of space. Space that could have been used for an excerpt of, and link to, "My Team". This was suggested following a previous WCG email and was to be taken into consideration "...when we redesign the email template" Disappointed that this hasn't happened.

Re: New Design - Observations and Notes

Did WCG get a new server(s) or something? In the past, there was always a delay of a few seconds when accessing any WCG web sites. This morning, they come up almost instantaneously -- even the results page. Kudos.

Re: New Design - Observations and Notes

Don't know about you guys, but feel there to be substantially more mouse footage being traversed in the new layout than the past. Frequentist user unfriendly. We need drop-downs menus on the right side of the utility bar to ease this long distance runaround. Javascript galore already, so see no reason to hold back on that.

thx.

Re: New Design - Observations and Notes

More drop-down menus would be good but with a maximum of 7 or 8 options on each. If more options are required then sub-menus.

The present drop-down menu for Research on the top ribbon has 25 options + 3 descriptive lines. Too large to be useful and too intrusive on a casual mouse-over. At the very least the 16 options under "Completed Research" should be hived off into 1 or more sub-menus.

Re: New Design - Observations and Notes

Whilst hitting the 'End' key when having the over-long Research hover menu work great [that was a good tip], I'd vote for that menu to be shrunk to the Completed Research single line item only [jumping to the Completed Research page]. For the forum menu, I'd do the same, only the Recent, Member, Known Issues, Start Here and active/ intermittent in a dropdown, chat and team of course as the frequent places, and possibly Index at top of the list. Since the utility bar sits at the very top of the pages, not scrolling anywhere in the middle, there's substantial room to play with to enhance/speedup the experience.
