I think there may be more of a risk of having more work in your cache than you've asked for with MCM1 and BOINC 7.x. BOINC 6.x used the time to completion numbers to figure when you needed more work in your cache. As I understand it, BOINC 7 uses a FLOPS estimate. With MCM1, WUs vary much more than with past projects. I suspect that increases the chance that the FLOPS estimate could be off. I don't really see this being much of an issue if you're not running with a big cache - like over 4-5 days. The larger the cache, the bigger the risk of Wu's not getting completed in time. However, if you set your cache to say one day, you could actually have noticably more or less work than that. With a small cache, that won't normally matter. If you're doing something like trying to run your cache dry right before you shut your machines down and go on vacation, it may be a bit harder to have the last work finish close to shutdown time. I'm not completely convinced I'm right about all this but, given some work I've done with one of my machines, I definitely am wondering.

Keith, I don't understand the problem you are having an issue with. If you are saying you want to control the amount of work in your cache prior to shutting down the machines for taking time off, I think you already have that regardless of the algorithm used to determine how many WUs to load into the cache.
If I want to have control over the numbers of WUs downloaded, I would reduce the "Max additional work buffer" to zero. On the day I plan to do the shutdown, I would go to Project and specify "No new tasks". I think this should be done regardless of the algorithm used by BOINC to determine the number of WUs to be downloaded. Am I missing something in what you are saying? |

I've notice with the MCM wu's, they seem to be consistent in their times, now.
----------------------------------------I have about 15 WU's ready to report, and they all took just short of four hours to complete (give or take just a few minutes).

We have 4 android devices which run the "Fight Aids ..." project and I am seeing a bunch of the WUs being marked invalid (17 after just reviewing the results). I don't see any indication in the log regarding why they should be so marked this way. The latest I reviewed has 16 tasks and ends with:
[02:45:20] Starting task 15,CPU time is 24818.830000. [02:45:20] ./ZINC04037134.pdbqt size = 21 7 ../../projects/www.worldcommunitygrid.org/fahv.x3AVCaINy3A.pdbqt size = 2842 0 [03:05:43] Finished task #15 cpu time used 1175.580000 03:05:43 (3867): called boinc_finish </stderr_txt> ]]> Can anyone give me any idea of why a WU may be marked invaalid? |
