Evening all. Cars can indeed be expensive toys. One of my managers daughters passed her driving test the other day and her Mazda thingy (basically a 15yr old Fiesta) has been quoted as around £200/month for the insurance alone. Insane amount of money. genhos you should emigrate to Bolivia. Compulsory insurance (SOAT) is £8.00 a year regardless of the age of the driver - no other is necessary (I believe it provides enough money to bury your victims!). There is a sort of road tax which decreases with vehicle age and is around £280.00 a year for a 2010 model. Petrol is about 67p a litre but diesel is very difficult to get hold of (as it is used in the manufacture of Cocaine). As a cheaper alternative you can convert your car to gas which is about 10p per litre of gasoline equivalent.

I have no-one but myself to blame for the price of parts, really, but with no family-car requirements, I wanted something nice and comfortable to drive - it's not a Ford Fiesta, nope, it's a Vauxhall Astra VXR (demo-option 20" wheels with low-profile tyres). 20" wheels... with ultra-thin Durex-branded tyres? Something like that - 245/35 R20! http://i.imgur.com/1AHCbM6.jpg ![]() |

Good Morning All.
----------------------------------------15 mm of welcome rain this morning. Everything is fresh and the birds are singing and chirping happily. More rain forecast for this afternoon and in between showers I have to dismount all of the christmas lights and christmas tree too. Ah well - back up again in 11 months!

The only snag about motoring in Bolivia is the dreadful roads, from what I've seen on TV. What's it called? The "Road of Death" or something like that.
----------------------------------------Nice FAAH2 Diamond 20 for Mamajuanauk yesterday, to add to his impressive collection.

Good Morning Team
----------------------------------------The only snag about motoring in Bolivia is the dreadful roads, from what I've seen on TV. What's it called? The "Road of Death" or something like that. dc you are correct that roads are not of the standard that you see in Europe or the USA but improvements are being made daily. There is now fully paved road from Santa Cruz to Cochabamba, Puerto Suarez, La Paz and many more. The Road of Death is only for idiots, adrenaline junkies and desperate people. Unfortunately it collapses regularly due to landslides, especially in the rainy season (now). It is so bad that they (the government transport ministry) have instigated a one way system depending on the time of day. There are rescue (read body recovery) teams on standby every day. One big problem here is when locall people have a dispute with the government they are very likely to blocked a major road leading to days of delay. Always travel with sufficient food and water for a week and a spare 25 litres of petrol!

South America is on my "to visit" list in the next 10 years. A bit of a daunting prospect to a non-Spanish speaking soft European. Definitely not Columbia, but probably Chile/Peru/Bolivia (depending how brave I feel).

£8 for insurance! Silly prices compared to here and the fuel cost as well! Crazy. Then again even our bad roads sound like billiard tables compared to a lot of the roads in S America.
