I'd assumed you'd factored in the electricity cost before your crunching went stellar Tom, or maybe you had. I reckon with my "proper server" it's about £15 per core/year (although the more cores I run, the less each core on average uses). I have a Celeron/Atom thing (which is supposed to be a router but is currently a media server) which can run four real cores for about 11W in total, or about £3 per core/year. However, each unit takes 5-10 times longer than my proper machine, depending on the amount of floating point maths involved. Good for the run time and badges, rubbish for points. However, you look at it, it costs money.

TomNuttal, that is some electric bill. I don't blame you shutting a server down.
I'll be deciding on my new build next week and although I'm excited about it, I'm not looking forward to my next electric bill. Still, it's the price we pay. The solar panels have helped a lot so far and I'm hoping my electricity use will not exceed what is generated by much.
