Re: Beta Testing VINA on Android Devices - July 9, 2013 - Issues Thread

I have finished a few SN2S Betas on my Nexus 7 (Android 4.2.2). No error, everything works fine.

However I am a bit worried about the temperature.
If I use all 4 cores for boinc the casing of my Nexus is close to 50°C/122°F (measured via Infra Red Thermometer), which is quite high (room temp is about 25°C/77°F). Due to high temperature I am not running 24/7 on the tablet. There is a option to set max temp level for the battery. But even with that option my Nexus casing is hotter than the limit. Will there be an option to set max CPU temp?

In addition I have noticed that there is a big difference if I use 2 or 4 cores regarding runtime.
With 2 cores WUs need about half of the time they need when I run 4 cores. So there is no big difference regarding output of using 2/4 cores.
I dont know if this is due to limited hardware performance or due to temperature problems.

Hello KodeX,
The Google Nexus 7 tablet uses the Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core chip. Each core is powered individually and all 4 can be used for "max burst, when needed". NVIDIA Tegra 3 review Sounds like they are aware of overheating. Since all 4 cores use the same 1 MB L2 cache, you might consider using 1 or 2 cores only (I would use 1 to avoid overheating).

So far I have tried a couple of WUs on my ancient (2-yo) HTC Flyer tablet. Both finished successfully, one in 3.5 hrs. and the other in 2.5.

markop619,

You also have to join the Google Group for Android Testing. Then sign in with your Google ID and it should let you download.

Hope that helps.

After joining the group you may have to wait a few minutes before the 404 goes away. I did.

Re: Beta Testing VINA on Android Devices - July 9, 2013 - Issues Thread

I have now crunched several days worth of beta WUs on a Galaxy S3. Mostly SN2S plus a few FAHV ones. No real problems so far. Only 1 error with an FAHV beta ("ERROR: VINA was killed by signal 9.").

One thing I'm seeing, though, is that there are still a few FAHV beta WUs which are sitting in PVal state with the other task still waiting to be sent -- and that for several days. For example:
BETA_ FAHV_ x4I7G_ RT_ NNRTIadj_ wNNRTI_ 0045262_ 1017_ 0-- 700 Pending Validation 13/07/13 20:23:22 14/07/13 20:28:19 3.06 14.5 / 0.0
BETA_ FAHV_ x4I7G_ RT_ NNRTIadj_ wNNRTI_ 0045262_ 1017_ 1-- - Waiting to be sent — — 0.00 0.0 / 0.0

Re: Beta Testing VINA on Android Devices - July 9, 2013 - Issues Thread

Thank you very much on your answer. I installed it on my Galaxy Nexus, I put WCG to run on both cores, I hope that this is ok. Does somebody know when will this be out of beta and will be other projects running on Android like it is on regular PC? This is great and I am delighted that I can crunch more projects on the same time because I have dual core PC. Thank you.
