Re: Hardware hangout.....cases, cooling, 'clocking!!!

I've fumbled around inside a couple of cases and it seems a bit like meccano - get a few bits and bolt or plug together. Is it really this easy?

yep...more of the challenge may come in deciding what to get wink

Re: Hardware hangout.....cases, cooling, 'clocking!!!

I was thinking about the cheapest of everything, so if it does go wrong I won't be too bothered. Fortunately Sony don't make computer parts so there's no chance of me overspending biggrin

Now, where did I put that link for dabs.com wink

Re: Hardware hangout.....cases, cooling, 'clocking!!!

That's pretty much it. I run some Adobe s/ware for pictures and video but any new machine I build will be primarily for the 'fun' of building - and crunching of course smile

I can see the argument between Intel and AMD; a bit like Sony and everyone else biggrin but what about the OS? WCG won't run on Linux and besides, I wouldn't know Linux if it mugged me in the street with a very sharp knife confused

I assume Windows XP is th eonly choice?

Re: Hardware hangout.....cases, cooling, 'clocking!!!

wonders where the hardware master and thread originator has wandered off to...

much funner putting together your own rig...and you aren't stuck with proprietary parts if something should ever need replacing/upgrading...insert other reasons here that i've somehow lost the mood to go into...

as i was saying, i hope vaio will step in, he's pretty good at finding deals too, especially as he's on the same side of the pond as you. whatcha looking at getting? would be good to know to make sure things are compatible... smile
