I have had to upgrade the cooling on two PCs that I run 24/7 with the agent.
One is a P4 2 Gig that I have wound up to 2,3 (cannot get anymore out of it as the memory is cheap and doesn't cope with higher clock speeds. The CPU fan needed changing as the PC is two years old and fan had died on me (Had sprayed WD 40 on the bearings at least twice and the CPU was slowing itself down). I had to soak the CPU in WD40 overnight to get it to release the old heat sink. The choice of fan was an artic cooler (sounds sexy) and it looks cool with copper heat pipes going up into the fins of the cooler: ![]() This is an overkill as the CPu runs at around 38-40 degrees. The main chip set had a minute heat sink, so I swapped this out for a larger one: ![]() The temperature is around 31 degrees now, down from 42. The second PC is an AMD64 runnig at 1,8G. It started overheating with the agent running 24/7 so I switched the heat sink to an artic cooler as well. Runs aroun 50 degrees all the time as the fan speed is variable depending on heat sink temp. ![]() and the same heat sink for the chip set. I do not play games, so no mods to the memory or to the video cards. I did however put a rear fan in the boxes (variable speed) that kick in when it starts getting hot, otherwise they just tick away at around 1000RPM. Changed the Power supply fans to artic quiet models as well. ![]() The artic fans are very quiet, so I can hear the hard discs in the boxes and not the cooling fans. I have one PC outside my bedroom door - and it doesnot bother me at night. ... and my hat comes off to WD40 - the universal "fix evrything" squirty worthy! |

I had to soak the CPU in WD40 overnight to get it to release the old heat sink. ![]() ![]() I thought WD 40 was safe for just about anything. ![]() Have a look at this: http://www.octanecreative.com/WD40/#cocaineanchor my favourite is LONDON (Reuters) - The makers of the handy spray lubricant WD-40 proudly list 2,000 uses for their product, from unsticking rusty screws or squeaky bicycle chains to polishing frying pans. But police have found another -- keeping the public from snorting cocaine off toilet lids in bars. Police in Bristol said on Wednesday they have been advising pub and nightclub owners to spray the colourless lubricant on toilet seats and other flat surfaces in the lavatory that customers often use to snort drugs. Apparently, cocaine and spray lube don't mix. "A chemical reaction takes place with the cocaine that causes it to congeal and become a mess so it's unusable," a police spokesman said. "It's one very small, very cheap way in which you can very seriously restrict the amount of drug use in your premises." ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

dunno, as long as you clean it up well before applying thermal paste, i suppose...just never heard of using that. glad it came off safely, i've heard horror stories about heatsinks stuck to cpu's...none mine though.

I've fumbled around inside a couple of cases and it seems a bit like meccano - get a few bits and bolt or plug together. Is it really this easy?
