Tell us what you want, snoekie. The various options have been offered:
----------------------------------------1. Set an exclusive for the applications so that BOINC is paused when you use the dictate program or anything else that need more juice. 2. Reduce the CPU use. For instance your 2600 will run 8 tasks simultaneous, so if you set "On Multiprocessor system use at most 75% of processors", only 6 jobs will run. 3. Set BOINC to pause when your [non-BOINC] use of the computer exceeds a certain percent. This is done with the "While [non-BOINC] processor usage is less than 50 percent". Any percent can be entered there until you find the one that least interferes with your program. 4. Also the familiar standard [default] pause of BOINC can be set if any mouse/keyboard user input is detected (don't know if voice activation of a dictate program will be detected). Esoteric. Of course for these options to work you have to set the Activity menu to "Run based on preferences". All preferences are described in this manual http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Preferences (Berkeley seems to be off line presently). --//-- edit: spellcheck and link address fix edi2: To add as something important to consider. If running any scheduled interruption due user input, set the "Leave Application in Memory wehn suspended", else the tasks will unload and resume from last checkpoint. This could lead to a day of crunching without little progress if you're busy. [Edit 3 times, last edit by Former Member at May 16, 2012 12:50:02 PM] |

Following on from the previous post, to which I had no response, after some reflection I changed the settings which were to stop as soon as I became active on the machine to one where it could work. Still the programme backs off completely notwithstanding the change of settings , 3 days ago, ie more than 2 cycles ago. I double checked the changes last night an did a bit of tweaking, but still the is a total cessation if I so much as fractionally move the mouse orb press a key. To overcome that I have tried a 0 delay before work is resumed, no effect. YES this is the way it is designed to be! If you set the program to STOP when you use the machine, if you move the mouse the program say 'ahha the machine is in use' and stops Boinc! It might be better if you were to use the % setting under the processor usage tab, SekeRob, or anyone else, can explain much better than I can. ![]() ![]() |

Resolved the problem, but it essentially the same as the start of this thread, instructions are ignored.

Thanks for the ignoring message. Plz edit your opening post and insert [RESOLVED] in the title just as done to this post. We'll then can 'ignore' this thread.

Sorry Sekerob, I hadn't seen your last posting before I did my posting.
However your posting allowed me to do one further tweak. Thank You. Just one remaining question, where o I find the box for the duration of the snooze? |

Maybe if you share your final set of "key" preferences after the last tweak, then we (other interested members) learn something from the exchange. What CPU%, Processor Time %, Pausing % when user is at system, when BOINC is to stop, etc. Nobody will eat you alive if it's not becoming well... first there will be sautéing ;P

Serekob, I had to change under activity the run based on preferences to always run, and the preferences, device manager, which I cannot always find again, 75% processor use, a 0 so that it would run, reporting .0020 days, cannot remember the disk space, but more than adequate and it is running 9 projects at the moment with another 26+ odd waiting in the wings and at the last count about 6 waiting to report (not responding to do network communication-twas ever thus).
The earlier 'yell' was because every time I touched the keyboard it suspended all activity, even though the preferences were not that different from the above, but were being ignored, until I cruised the took bar If I have serious dictation to do I will snooze the work, hence my question. In the old version I set snooze at 10 min, but don't seem to be able to find that in this latest version, and snooze seems to be at least 20 min. |

The default "snooze" is, as started via the system tray, always 60 minutes, flat. At some point it was proposed for making it a drop down list of pre-defined snooze lengths. 30, 60 , 90 , 120, 180... for those who like to watch movies without jitter [if they incur that]. But then, there's the "<exclusive_app>" option for the cc_config.xml, where users can define to pause BOINC long as for instance wow.exe is loaded.
<exclusive_app>wow.exe</exclusive_app> BOINC will suspend computing whenever the specific executable is running (e.g., a game). Multiple applications can be specified. Warning: Do check your system for other applications with the same name. Since there will be no path used, any application with this name will suspend BOINC, not just the one you want (like a game). <exclusive_gpu_app> BOINC will suspend computing done on the GPU only whenever the specified executable is running. Multiple applications can be specified. One line per application. Warning: Do check your system for other applications with the same name. Since there will be no path used, any application with this name will suspend BOINC, not just the one you want (like a game). Not mentioned in this edited BFS quote, but the name of the science has to be Case correct, so if the Task Manager shows WoW.exe, than that mask must be entered. At least, if BOINC does not pause respecting such a line, check for the correctness of the mask entered versus the TM. Shouting does not work btw. There's an automatic response dampener, the louder the longer ;>) --//-- P.S. Might not interest you, or you might already know all this, but other readers may be. |
