I have read the posts, and did do a reply but obviously didn't post it. I respect the views expressed The notation was "Running, High Priority". Now to me, as a native English speaking person, that can only mean one thing high priority being the order of the day. Several observed "running high priority", when I posted "Running, high priority" and the comma is significant. In the process it is using massive resources averaging about 55% with frequent spikes into the 90s and even 100%. I have noted this over a period of time, but really haven't done much about it except when dictating when I snooze the grid. Currently (and I didn't change anything), it is just "Running". Boinc is a Windows, mostly, program and Microsoft has NEVER been accused of making messages EASY TO UNDERSTAND!! Linux, Mac etc, etc, etc have taken lots of the MS error messages and copied them so one user can sit at many pc's and sorta figure out how they work, obviously it is easier on some then on others! I am glad you got it figured out!! ![]() ![]() |

WCG Techs are *Very* aware of the poor (unrefined) working of the BOINC throttle, which was never smoothed to some sleek operation as TThrottle offers [only works on Windows, does not work in WINE on Linux and OS-X), just because there's no developed code that could work and compile on all three supported OSses... Win/Lnx/Mac in the house of Berkeley.
1. WCG contemplates for the current version to lower the setting to 50% Preset profiles Default, Minimum Impact , Power Saving), so the alternation will be 1 second on, 1 second off (which is the cause of the hacksaw load seen in the Task Manager performance graph). This is such an even [low] load that fan spin up and down is prevented in the target devices, speak laptops that have poor cooling. This follows the long fielded advise by CAs to minimize fan wear, when not using TThrottle, whilst tools as SpeedFan have no control over mobile device fans. (Not yet trialled if fancontrol works on a laptop, and very hesitant to meddle with the manufacturers cooling controls) 2. Studies on alternates that will produce a very fine grained control similar to of old when we had the IBM developed throttle for the UD client, that could be set with a slider from 25-100%). That will have to work on all platforms, a major challenge. The 50% setting in the web profiles, via the custom setting can be done at the flick of a members wrist. The BOINC implementation... maybe next solar cycle (#25). --//-- |

HMMMMMSSSSSSSS..... was just wondering why no-one else has mentioned that the newest verion of BOINC vers 7.025 (I think) has a new tab in computer preferences (Exclusive Applications). It shows that network activity and processor activities for Boinc will be suspended while the "Exclusive App" is running. Certainly sounds like this may a solution for Snoekie's Dragon. Would be interesting to hear what the techies have to say

For those doing the actual RTFM (not needing tech calling), this feature has been available through the cc_config.xml since probably the beginning of client 6. Only, in version 7n a simple interface was created to set that specific function, and still no cc_config.xml GUI (asked for many times).
----------------------------------------Whilst I'm saying that, BOINCTasks has been offering a direct edit option to the cc_config.xml, including syntax checking. So, you were saying ;? --//-- Addendum, per the manuals... since version 6.3.13 ;0): <exclusive_app>filename.exe</exclusive_app> edit: If you forget to exit the application, your BOINC will be suspended until you do! Just that you know. In that, setting a client to suspend when using the system, with for instance a 5-10-15 delay if working in staccato, is better and default of the minimum impact preset profile! OK, I have just registered the new machine, and been required to sign up anew and would you believe, I am a total stranger with my email not registered nor my moniker. When I repeat the selfsame detaiks, allowed. So all my points, like those from BOINC's predecessors all gone.
Excuse me, what is going on? |

and I cannot find the projects to add to the new machine(I saw them) that I am crunching, malaria and aids.
And then there are going to be limitations, but don't seem to be able to get there. Apparently before I can post I have to earn 50 points. Errrr, where are my 3.7 mil points? Don't they qualify? |

snoekie,
----------------------------------------Nobody required you to do that, as there's a box during the project attach process, that asks if you're already a member, which then only requires you to enter existing name and password. Simply detach that machine from WCG and attach again. Think WCG made a video of this procedure posted in the Help section. --//-- P.S. If you registered as a new member, which cannot be done directly during project attaching in BOINC, did you use the same or a different email address for the new "snoekie"? edit: Here's the procedure to change the member that is associated with a computer: https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/vi...uter+AND+is+AND+currently Nothing is lost, long as head is kept cool ;-) [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at May 13, 2012 5:55:16 PM] |

sekerob, used identical details, but then after much searching, found that the Boinc I added my new detail was to Berkeley, rather than WCG, apparently running in parallel, and no cross reference.
Now cured, and trying to add to the new machine work, hopefully will get there. |

OK, this is now posted from the new machine, and appears to have downloaded and is running according to one page some 30 tasks, but the tasks page says 9, and all suspended, although I changed the preference from to suspend when the machine is active, until I suspend the activity, which I will do when dictating. I guess that will only happen when I reboot.
I am active on the machine a lot of the time, but that activity doesn't require exclusivity as activities are low processor use and with 16g RAM and 2600 whatever on the CPU (i7), it should easily be able to cope. Where do I go to to set out the more detailed specifics? The customised settings referred to and referred too above about selecting one processor (of 4). Maybe 2 can be used. Dictation is not that often. |

Following on from the previous post, to which I had no response, after some reflection I changed the settings which were to stop as soon as I became active on the machine to one where it could work.
Still the programme backs off completely notwithstanding the change of settings , 3 days ago, ie more than 2 cycles ago. I double checked the changes last night an did a bit of tweaking, but still the is a total cessation if I so much as fractionally move the mouse orb press a key. To overcome that I have tried a 0 delay before work is resumed, no effect. |
