I have always had a minimum impact stipulation for 'lending my machine, but I have only recently found out why mu 'old' machine suddenly had the dramatic slows, loading from the internet, my voice dictation, even opening my word processing package and files from it and saving files. Used to be instant until recently and then it took seconds, sometime up to 10. I cannot change the priority once the instruction is given from the download.
So much so that I felt I needed a new machine, which I got. According to the run recently done and again now, I find, notwithstanding my specific minimum impact profile instruction for the device it has assigned "running, high profile" to the run. Sorry grid, you will lose me and my machines unless your correct the defect. On this basis I will not be adding my new i7 quad core 16g Ram to the research, which I was intending to do, because clearly your take liberties with your volunteers, almost as if you have the divine right, that is taking liberties. "Running High Priority" is a misnomer. What it really means is "Running before the earlier tasks". These tasks run at the same low priority as the others.
----------------------------------------You may have got some repair or betas. Edit: Also you may have too big a work buffer. ![]() "Patience is a virtue", I can't wait to learn it! [Edit 1 times, last edit by petehardy at May 1, 2012 7:06:53 PM] |

"Running high profile" or "running high priority"?, it does not really matter, as if your device profile association is Minimum Impact and the Activity menu selection is set to "Run based on preferences", than BOINC will adhere. "Running High Priority" (I've got 3 Beta jobs doing that ATM), merely means that the client thinks there are not enough ''active'' crunching hours in the day to run to finish the results in time, so it orders them in ''earliest deadline first'' sequence mode. Start by reducing the cached / additional buffer setting to 0.0 days [default may be 0.3 days IIRC], and BOINC will only start fetching work when the previous tasks is nearly finished. After a while, once the cache is reduced, the High Priority mode should go away. Also would recommend to select short task assignments such as HCC/CFSW/C4CW, as that further reduces change of Angst with the BOINC.
Let us know if you need help to tweak [customize] the minimum impact profile --//-- |

Hello snoekie,
----------------------------------------The problem with Dragon Natural Speaking (or other program) may be caused by BOINC, but Running High Priority has nothing to do with it. That just means that the BOINC scheduler is using an alternate set of scheduling rules but the selected project is running the same as ever. Instead, let us look at other ways of accommodating your software. We should look at the first part of your Messages Tab on BOINC Monitor to see what sort of system you have. On the assumption that you have N cores, I suggest you free up a core in your preferences so BOINC only uses N-1 cores. Lawrence added: BOINC Monitor - - pre-nap. Suggest you either reduce the number of thread used to crunch with or change your settings to suspend when the CPU reaches a certain percent you assign. I find it easier to reduce threads used in half, then add or subtract from there.

I just read down through the help comments you got. These people are "top shelf". You can totally control how much of your machine BOINC uses, in the preferences in BOINC Manager.
----------------------------------------In Processor usage, You do not really need to cut anything but the number of cores (e.g., if it is a hyper threaded quad, cut to six cores (75%), and "Use at most..." I have one desktop at 60% and all of my laptops at 50%. I am running 6 i7 machines, five HT quads and one HT six core. BOINC does not get every core on any machine. I don't think that "Connect about every..' and "Additional work buffer..." will hurt you. They just set the number of WU's queued up. Let me tell you, this is not hard. I am not very literate I/T wise, these guys always need to help me, and we all, together, get it done. I also at the same time am doing audio and video work, blog work, etc. We will be delighted to have any number of cores or threads you wish to lend to the enterprise. Hey, Dudes, I just crossed 15 million credits!! On March 5,when I got the new MainGear Shift Super-Stock with the HT six core and twin GTX580's, I was at 7.3 million. So, from Feb 2007 until early March 2012, 7.3 million, and in just under two months, another 7.7 million. Now I can run GPUGrid, SETI@home, Einstein@home, and Milkyway@home, they, are the reason for the leap. I think that anyone running WCG with its bent toward biological/medical issues could be happy at GPUGrid. |

I have read the posts, and did do a reply but obviously didn't post it.
I respect the views expressed The notation was "Running, High Priority". Now to me, as a native English speaking person, that can only mean one thing high priority being the order of the day. Several observed "running high priority", when I posted "Running, high priority" and the comma is significant. In the process it is using massive resources averaging about 55% with frequent spikes into the 90s and even 100%. I have noted this over a period of time, but really haven't done much about it except when dictating when I snooze the grid. Currently (and I didn't change anything), it is just "Running". As for how to split things, perhaps easy for the techies, but all I know is my WP prog, how to run Nat Speak, post emails and browse the web (when the mood takes me), usually news. But it was frustrating having to wait seconds over the last few months for a page to load, or for 10-15 seconds for the WP prog to load, and on occasions for any reaction. The workings of the minutiae of computers have me stumped, because they come up with some alien intelligence phrases, which mean not a lot to me (in fact cause puzzlement), but probably everything to you. |

Just go into the settings to make the changes. Not real hard. Little confusing when first starting but gets better with time. If you do decide to make changes, look for processor usage and change that to 60%. Or, just pause the project when you need to use your system. That's the simplest way. We are here to help in any way. Just ask.

Hello snoekie,
Not to worry. The first thing is to double click on the BOINC Manager icon. If it comes up in the Simple view (the one with a picture) select the Advanced view in the Menu. Then select the Messages tab. Scroll it up to the beginning of the messages. Click on Copy Selected Messages and, holding down the Shift key, select the first page. Then post these messages in this thread. This will tell us about your computer so that we can suggest changes to your preferences. Your preferences are located at WCG at My Grid - Device Manager - (Selected Profile) which might be Default, Home, Work, or School, depending on which you chose. High Priority on a running task means the scheduler is worried that it might not return the task on time so it is running it without regard to the normal first in / first out logic of the scheduler algorithm. It has no effect on the Windows OS priority, which is a different thing. Lawrence |
