Re: Computing for Sustainable Water Problems Thread

I have 23 Pentium 4 512MB PCs running BOINC on a school which I manage their computers.

This project seems to consume more memory than other projects. For some reason, the project then stops (running at 0% on task manager) but shown on BOINC as running, and makes the PCs run slower.

This slowness is only for this project since those computers ran other projects fine. I changed virtual memory to 4096 and they seem to run faster, but the project still are at 0%, then continues randomly.

Re: Computing for Sustainable Water Problems Thread

Is anybody seeing unusually long run times? For instance, 26 hours/wu and not getting nearly the estimated credit. Other boxes identical except for cpu are finishing in about 4.5 - 6 hrs. The boxes in question are showing 99 to 100 % efficiency, but still are taking over a day to complete. A 6 core running at 1.8 Ghz in the same setup is finishing in around 6 hours, another 6 core running at 2.4 Ghz is finishing in about 4.5 hours, but these quad cores running at 2.3 Ghz are taking 24 to 26 hours per wu.
Any ideas? confused

Ubuntu 10.10 X64
4 GB Ram
Dual Opteron 2356's at 2.3 Ghz
Boinc Client 6.10.56

Jason,

It sounds as though you may have some stalled work units...on your machines in terminal, can you run 'ps -ef | grep wcg' Once you have that can you post it to the thread here: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,33013

Thanks,

Re: Computing for Sustainable Water Problems Thread

I seem to have an odd problem with one of my machines.
My "results status" page tells me it has over a page of work in progress, plenty of valid work and one lone error.
My machine tells me it has only one unit currently running and none in cache.
I regret I will be unable to return work that is listed on my machine ID but which I simply do not have.
Resetting the project appears to have had no effect that I can see.

Re: Computing for Sustainable Water Problems Thread

I'm seeing 50% completion time differences on three machines.

Intel E7500 + Win 7 Home Premium (64-bit) = 3.35 hours
AMD Athlon II x4 640 + Win XP Home = 6.49 hours
Intel E5200 + Win XP Pro = 7.37 hours

All work units consume >256MB of memory.

Under the "Tasks" tab, are you sure you haven't selected "Show active tasks"? If, so, select "Show all tasks."

Re: Computing for Sustainable Water Problems Thread

Linux is no match to Windows 7, if that's a problem. The quota of 1 on the machine made me boot back my Ubuntu 64 11.10 to W7-64 and find 4.37 hours average for latter and 5.45 hours for former or 24.71% slower for the Linux.

The other observation was to find my quad idling this morning because the initial quota on a device *new* to a science app with the new server 700 is 2 per processor core (not 2 per computer as the client is messaging) AND to note that error free reporting is required NOT any validation has to be waited for as was IIRC suggested somewhere on these forums.

256 World Community Grid 19-4-2012 23:57:08 This computer has finished a daily quota of 2 tasks

Now that I DO consider a problem, made worse by the test client 7.0.26 rushed out (7.0.25 now prematurely [IMO] pushed by Berkeley). When minimum buffer (MinB) is set to 0.01 and max additional buffer (MaxAB) to 0.50, 8 got issued and 7 sat there in RtR, waiting on the MinB point to arrive before trying to fetch work again.

Fortunately, I woke up because the soothing humming from the study was absent, so the longest idle core period was just 36 minutes before hitting the update button to force a connection [only once], to get 29 CFSW in 6 installments, since the server needed to get the Ready to Report *acks* to release more.

Between 7:06 and 7:16 counting 5 additional *autonomous* work requests over and above the initial manual push button to get the buffer filled per setting. Not efficient, where one might think that server 700 and client 7.0.25 were tuned to each other. Maybe not.

edit: What's puzzling in the 2 quota messages is that the work requests were on 2 different UTC days, yet the first server reply back on the 20th was that the quota had been exhausted. Where Spock logic fails, Ingleside [I trust] will have fact correct explanations as how the code is designed to work. Code made by Men in Black... please flash me, as English is not my first language (nor 2nd or 3rd) :|

Under the "Tasks" tab, are you sure you haven't selected "Show active tasks"? If, so, select "Show all tasks."

Nope, I always run with "show all". I enabled a second project (HCC) and all it's tasks show up just fine. For some odd reason this is specific to the CfSW units.
