Wow yoro42. 3.9 hours on an i7? I don't know the difference, but I had always thought i7's were better than i5 were better than i3. Is this a wrong assumption on my part? I ask because the 2 wu's I received took about 1.56 hours each and I'm on an i5.

[Short answer is the hard to get beta are now harder to get although it will spread out to more systems. Which might be a good thing, considering that it's a Beta... Got 4 WUs on 4 different hosts, including my Mac. Was able to check 3 of them (on ended up on a laptop that I do not have (easy) access to) and they all run for at least an hour now just fine... Initially I got 35. All running smoothly and returned. 18 pendings and 17 valids.
----------------------------------------Afterwards I got 1 resend from an error task. Still in progress like the initial wingman. Due to the new server code, each core has a quota of one per day (at least that's what my messages were reporting). That means that even if more units are available when you finish the first ones, you will need to have a work unit validated (not just returned) before it will download another one. @Shrubbery - If I download WUs for a project that I haven't crunched at all since the 7 March server upgrade, I get "Message from server: This computer has finished a daily quota of 2 tasks" as soon as I have cached 2 WUs per core. With the Beta WUs, I was just getting "No tasks sent" messages after I had cached one per core. I'm aware that prior to the upgrade there was a limit of one downloaded Beta WU per core at any one time.So are you sure that we now have a quota of one Beta WU per core per day, or I think you then imply one non-validated Beta WU per core at any one time? Or is it more complicated still? - a combination of one downloaded Beta WU per core at any one time AND 2 non-validated Beta WUs per core at any one time? |

Interesting beta...a Sqlite DB, a predetermined set of parameters, and then - I'm guessing - what are effectively computer-synthesized "humans" doing their individually relatively insignificant (typically) but collectively monstrous (potentially) "dirty deeds".
It is almost too bad that UVA didn't try to talk Facebook/Zynga into replacing that dreadful "Farmville" game with this effort. |

I can speak out of experience. The limit is 1 BETA per core and it doesn't matter whether returned tasks are validated or not. |

It seemed to run well on the few that I received. All the ones with a wingman have turned up valid so far.

Shrubbery isn't right with his suggestion. I can speak out of experience. The limit is 1 BETA per core and it doesn't matter whether returned tasks are validated or not. Actually, there's 2 limits, it's the "good old" 1 BETA per core, there you in theory can get a new beta every time you finish an old beta. But, you've also got the new limit of a daily quota per application per computer per core, and atleast for other WCG-applications this start at 2 but possibly the beta-application is limited to 1. Since it's per application, every time there's a new beta-application, the quota for the application starts with the default quota. Since the quota only increases on validation, you can return 1 beta-result but not get any more beta's, due to no beta with the new application have been validated yet. Now, as long as we're only talking of beta, in practice the supply << demand so chances are the only messages most will see is "no work available" and "there was work for other platform". So the quota starting on 2 or possibly 1 doesn't really matter. Then the project is launched on the other hand, anyone trying to only run this project to quickly get a new badge, can initially be hit with the quota, and if haven't got any cache of other work can actually run-out of work before enough tasks starts getting validated. This will be the same for any single-project-users if their projects application is upgraded. In any case, 2 betas both returned & validated without any problems. "I make so many mistakes. But then just think of all the mistakes I don't make, although I might." [Edit 1 times, last edit by Ingleside at Apr 13, 2012 11:42:07 AM] |
