Re: Server Software Upgrade issues, Mar-6-2012 ~14:30 UTC - 21:00 UTC

What better news in 3 days? Why 3 days? It is no good news if you hold back completed tasks when the validators are working perfectly fine at this point and they will not be interrupted until the 15th. What you will be missing out on too is the high credits currently granted... in three days time they'll bound to have gravitated to a lower average.

--//--

Sent some back earlier today, still waiting a number of hours later for the validator to catch up. (no Try Validator button)

I increased my cache to 5 days then back to 1 day (my usual level). With WCG down grading my PC's performance due to the upgrade, I expect that all the WUs will be done within 2.5 days. With WCG down again soon for the next upgrade, I want to make sure I have enough WUs to progress without lost of another 5 days worth of processed WUs (though if you say that the next upgrade has now been rescheduled for 15th, I expect that my PCs will be waiting for work and highly likely to return lost work, as I do know that server / software / service upgrades very rarely run without hiccups).

I prefer to send back WUs that aren't lost than to get high credit.

I am going to be away next week (my PCs will be still crunching), so I expect to do work that will be lost again then.

....I expect..... I want... I expect...
7.5 years of crunching and that is all that your experience has to say. I am really sorry that you have had such a rough time; all that stress of worrying. The hours of sitting there watching the WU get processed, expecting that at any point, a random WU will get skipped over. Spending all these years keeping track of every lost WU; tallying the damage.

Here no big issues, machines are running & crunching, tasks have been reported and most valid some other PV, nothing I did not see before, around 4 pages of PV which is just slightly normal.

I am a bit surprised to read all these post in this thread.

I'm not. I know that last time there was an upgrade, all my PCs were waiting for work. Therefore this time, as I knew that the service was going down, I increased my cache beforehand.
Yes, I do keep an eye on what is happening from time-to-time. If I get lost work, then I get lost work.

I know that the upgrade was major and well carried out in the time scale. I wasn't surprised that it took longer than planned or that there were problems / glitches.

Those words are used for an individual or a group (like the WCG staff) who are capable of responding to legitimate concerns, not for an individual or group who are incapable of even understanding what the talk may be all about.

I didn't mess with an increased cache at all, all my PCs (roughly 30 running WCG) did work through what was "naturally assigned" without a hitch...
I know that the upgrade was major and well carried out in the time scale. I wasn't surprised that it took longer than planned or that there were problems / glitches.
Actually, it did take longer (only a few hours though) and if there aren't any glitches still needs to be seen...

Re: Server Software Upgrade issues, Mar-6-2012 ~14:30 UTC - 21:00 UTC

Well to me it does. If there are no reliable hosts, all goes quorum 2, either immediate or in the second instance. At present we have a mix of work in the cycle.

1. Work assigned prior to the upgrade, which was circulated using the reliability rating. Returned after the upgrade requires a 2nd wingman. Not aware that at present time tasks are allowed to go it alone.
But then
a) I would rather expect to see those WUs sitting in PV jail, not as "inconclusive"
b) at the time I mentioned this, only three out of 30 hosts showed up on the inconclusive list, I would have expected that many more hosts would be in that list, beside the occasional ones. And it seemed to be only CEP2 and C4CW WUs only, none of the SN2S ones...
2. Loss of some post service resume *early* returned results due some bad rule in the transitioner that had not shown it's face during testing. Not seen any go AWOL since the batch I had last night... that's now 18 hours ago. Since all return fine, with a little delay on validations at times.
After the system came back up last evening, PV jail filled up with about 12 pages (=180) of WUs until I went to bed. Would have expected going by "normal production" that there would have been roughly 240-250WUs in PV jail in the morning unless the validator got turned back on (which wasn't the case until I went to bed).
In the morning then, there where 8 pages of PV (=120 WUs), with roughly 50-60 validated over night and about 30 showing inconclusive. That means that somehow 40-50 WUs went MIA... sad

Just looked at my points received today after the update. Not sure if this was posted earlier but boy did I get more points than usual. Pretty sure it's a glitch to be fixed. Or did the points calculated get increased?

PS. Not complaining but don't want something I'm not supposed to have. wink

Yes they did. More like SETI now. biggrin

We are allowing the new credit code from Berkeley determine how much credit is awarded after this update. However, we won't see the full impact for a week due to the way it works. It is interesting to note though that according to: http://boincstats.com/stats/project_cpcs.php we are awarding half of what Seti grants, so a double of credit would bring us inline (I use Seti as a reference because they are most closely connected with David and BOINC).*

TCPBF,
And it seemed to be only CEP2 and C4CW WUs only, none of the SN2S ones...
these are Zero Redundancy (along with HFCC & FA@H, although I suspect you weren't crunching those at the time), and thus, they need a second wingman. SN2S (and DSFL, GFAM etc.), already have at least 1 more wingmen (HPF2 WU's have many), and thus, they'll get verified in the normal manner - it's just that you won't notice the reverifying of your computer that's going on in the background.
