Re: Intel 6-core machine crashing on V 6.10.34

Hi Jeanne,

On the quick [will get back later more expansive], AMD kind of opportunistically stole that moniker, which became generic for 64 bit CPU's on Intel code set... AMD64. 64 bit science applications on the grid are signified by x86_64 in the name... DC grid standard IIRC.

The later is, open services.msc, find the BOINC entry, open properties. Somewhere down the middle is a drop box entry "Automatic". Set that to "Automatic (Delayed Start)". On my W7 it nearly takes 2 minutes before it start crunching, whilst the sign in is more responsive [running off an 5400rpm SATA drive], well after WIFI has connected to the router. The <start_delay> option is the answer to handling the issue for all platforms.

Re: Intel 6-core machine crashing on V 6.10.34

FWIW, I did run 12 CEP2 concurrently for a month as an experiment. Configuration is Intel i7-980X, 12 GB memory, Windows 7 64-bit. I had no problems and no noticable impact when I was also using the machine for other light tasks.

The downside was that when I had to reboot some time was lost due to infrequent checkpoints.

Yup, that's the big pain with those very long checkpoint intervals. What efficiency are / were you achieving [the gap between Elapsed time and reported CPU time]?

Just from memory, the gap between Elapsed time and CPU time was in the range of a minute or two. Disk activity was very high, but not enough to slow things down.

That's superb... I'll have a go at the full 8, when I'm done with a whole slew of other tests that need to be done [whilst still maintaining some semblance of CPU time contribution].

Re: Intel 6-core machine crashing on V 6.10.34

I have the Core i7-970 (Gulftown) (130W), 3.2 GHz with Intel X58 Express chipset. I think it was a dumbed down version of the 980x and 990x, redesigned to hit a price point; didn't think the 3.3 or 3.4 Ghz was worth the extra money. At first glance I had also thought it was AMD, thinking that Intel didn't make 6-core, but then assumed that an Intel chipset was made by Intel and that HP wouldn't lie. Obviously I am only a driver and not a mechanic. For all I know, Intel might be buying chips from AMD and hyperthreading them to cut their research costs. lol

Jeanne just for the info. Intel and AMD are rivals in tough competition and each has his own CPU fab facilities. Today the top CPU for crunching come from Intel. For the general public and for crunching the most powerful CPUs are the 990X and the 3960X (this one is burning a little less energy as it is a more modern design). These are 6 core 12 thread. The X stands for the capability of setting the CPU frequency at a higher levels for overclocking.
For servers the latest Xeon CPUs are 8 core 16 threads and 10 cores 20 threads, but out of reach financially for our use.
Your Intel 970 is a very good cruncher for WCG. smile

Thanks for the comments, everyone. Learn something new every day, if only that there's a lot more to be learned.

Hypernova:
I was aware that AMD and Intel are separate shops and avid rivals, and that the X was for overclocking for gamers, but haven't won the lottery yet. Maybe M Zuckerberg will give us all 990X or those nice XEONS when FB does its IPO.

Re the 12 CEP2 concurrently test. It didn't happen. Tried to dedicate to only CEP2, but got everything else except CEP2. Guess they ran out of stock? Though one did come through today.

Did u increase the amount of CEP2 tasks to unlimited instead of one (default)

Spot:
How do I do that? When I check the box to participate in a project(s), they show up in flocks. And I think in the past I've had 6 or more CEP2 running at one time.
