FYI. For what it's worth... Moved to a new h8-1090t machine and downloaded BOINC V 6.10.34, which was supposed to work on multicore machines, and which was the version du jour on the download page. It was working fine until another program crashed and I had to restart. When I checked BOINC, everything was suspended due to "computational error" and nothing I tried would bring it back. Tried repairing in Control Panel, but not an option, so had to uninstall and then reinstall (thinking that this was a one-time event). However, history repeated itself. This time I found V 6.10.58, which seems to be running fine at the moment.
Has anyone else wiith a 6-core had this problem? The other interesting thing is that one day it showed the program running on 18 cores when 12 had been the previous max when I specified using 100% of processors (and I think there actually are only 12?). Bleeding edge, I know, but the thing does run really fast. Loaded Win7 in about 15 secs. from the SSD. (That's after I had to go back to zero using factory settings because I wasn't paying attention to where the file transfers were headed and overloaded the SSD.) I will update this post if I hit another snag. |

I think that a mod should change the headline to AMD 6-core

Hi,
----------------------------------------Thanks for the report, but where was this 6.10.34 "du jour"? WCG download points at 6.10.58 for all 3 main OS platforms. Computational error are most often seen when the core client is not succesful in communicating with the sciences during a 30 second time frame. System hangs or extreme busyness due to hangs in progress can cause this, not anything specific to a client version... and running 8 core here. Is this 6 cores, 12 threads device [Gulftown CPU]? --//-- [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Jan 31, 2012 1:57:51 PM] |

I think that a mod should change the headline to AMD 6-core I don't think an AMD can do HT which is the only way her 6 core can be a 12 core. BUT she DID say she has a 1090T, which I also have, and it IS an AMD 6 core cpu, so I don't know. ![]() ![]() |

I think h8-1090t desktops come with i7-970 /-980X or /-990X processors, which all have 12 ht threads. I had some issues on my 8-threaded Win7 machine some months ago reporting the wrong number of threads. I think it had something to do with switching to hibernate mode. Waking it up again, the system time was wrong (looked like factory date) and there were suddenly only 6 threads left, also in the system panel. One or two restarts fixed that problem - for some time at least.

That's what I found looking over at HP... a 6 core, 12 threaded CPU, of Intel. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?d...lc=en&product=5115730
----------------------------------------Well equipped device to run 12 threads of anything at WCG, cept maybe 12 CEP2 concurrent. --//-- edit: 12 cores can be locked in by setting <nscpu>12</nscpu> in the cc_config.xml <options> section. Sure will stop BOINC to not assume 18 for whatever reason. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Jan 31, 2012 4:52:09 PM] |

From specs in the HP hotlink :
Core i7-970 (Gulftown) (130W), 3.2 GHz Core i7-980X (Gulftown) (130W), 3.3 GHz Core i7-990X (Gulftown) (130W), 3.4 GHz From my system specs: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 970 @ 3.20 Ghz I have the Core i7-970 (Gulftown) (130W), 3.2 GHz with Intel X58 Express chipset. I think it was a dumbed down version of the 980x and 990x, redesigned to hit a price point; didn't think the 3.3 or 3.4 Ghz was worth the extra money. At first glance I had also thought it was AMD, thinking that Intel didn't make 6-core, but then assumed that an Intel chipset was made by Intel and that HP wouldn't lie. Obviously I am only a driver and not a mechanic. For all I know, Intel might be buying chips from AMD and hyperthreading them to cut their research costs. lol Now that you ask, I'm not certain how I got to the download page with V6.10.34. My usual path would have been from MyStatistics page, but when I tried that path again, I can only reach the V6.10.58 download, as you mentioned. I did not go looking for trouble. Been there. Done that. That was the first time I had seen a version mentioning multicores, so I thought BOINC had looked at my system specs and directed me to that page. Wrong again! Unfortunatelly I was in a panic to get the machine running again in time for market opening on Mionday and did not document the problem as well as I should have. However, SekeRob, you did mention the problem with timing causing computation error messages, and you may have hit the nail on the head. One thing I have noticed is that Win7 is loaded about 15-30 seconds before a full connection to the internet is made, and I usually wait for the internet to fully connect before I do anything else. BOINC, on the other hand, is set to load at startup. One of the messages was that the BOINC Manager was attempting to connect...I thought it said to Client, but not sure about that, and not sure who "Client" is, in this case. Do they mean the project client or client computer? At this point I tried to cancel out of that, but the message repeatedly kept popping back up so had to resort to TaskManager to get out of it. The easy solution might have been for me to just re-set BOINC so it doesn't start up immediately, had I known. Or, is there something missing from my system that it takes so long to get a full connection to the internet? Do I need to change the loading order of the devices? On my old machine, by the time Win7 loaded, there was already a full connection to the internet. No programs have crashed since I installed V6.10.58, so don't know if there will be repeats of the problem. But, if there is any major advantage to using V6.10.34, I would be willing to reinstall it, set it to start up after getting internet access, and see if this solves the problem. A number of beta tasks have suddenly shown up, so perhaps someone is already writing code to check out 6-core HT? And, SekeRob, was that a challenge, running 12 threads of CEP2 concurrently? Gotta try that, as soon as some of the other tasks are off the plate. Probably won't happen until the weekend, when I don't need the machine for anything else and can run it flat out. I'll post the results and also include the results from a couple of other Win7 64-bit machines for comparison. |

Hi jeanne95132,
BOINC comes with a cc_config.xml option to delay start of operations <start_delay>60</start_delay> [it's default in the WCG distro), but the one I'm using on Windows is in the service configuration, "Automatic Start [with delay]". Then all systems are up before BOINC starts to compute. For Linux I'm using this <start_delay> with a 60 second setting, so the WIFI gets the chance to build a live connection... after all these years of reporting this persistent bug, BOINC is *still* suffering from this. Yes and No on the challenge. Using BOINCTasks to monitor real time efficiency [time between elapsed time and CPU time], beyond 4 of 8 [or 2 of 4 on my quad], the throughput drops for this science quite a bit. That's a more general experience for many on multicore devices. Good Luck in your ultimate 12xCEP2 trial :D --//-- P.S. 6.10.34 may have been the second 'Recommend' after 6.10.17 and 6.10.58 the final of the 6.10 to get the one and only seal of approval by the WCGrid. The techs wrote in that they're sticking to 6.10.58 for now to even run with the coming GPU using science. No need to go higher [for exclusive WCG crunchers]. |

Hi SekeRob,
New headline is: Intel 6-core crashes on V 6.10.58. Not only did it crash, but it disappeared altogether! Huh? There were 2 Windows updates today (one for 64-bit cpu's and the other for NVIDIA 545), so after posting, I installed them and went out for a bite. I came back and the system had not autostarted so I pushed the button, anxious to see how BOINC Mgr was doing. There was a brief err message "BOINC unable to start correctly" which disappeared, so I looked for the BOINC Mgr but couldn't find it in the startup icons (bottom right hand corner), not in StartUp menu either, so looked in ControlPanel to uninstall and install again. It's not there anymore either. What is with this Houdini act? I will reinstall V6.10.58 and have it diappear again when I have to restart, but please give me more details on how to set the "Automatic Start [with delay]" in Windows. I haven't a clue. If this is a persistent bug, why doesn't BOINC build in enough delay to accommodate getting a live internet connection, especially so with SSD's getting faster, more affordable, and therefore more popular. I think it took 2-3 minutes to load Win7 on my old machine, but about 20 seconds on this one with the SSD. They're getting closer and closer to iPads "instant on". Anyway, sorry to have wasted your time re-solving old problems, but happy that we've figured out "probable cause" for the problem on my machine. Had wondered if using the GPU had been a contributing factor. Re "the challenge"/throughput drop...is this due to running out of available memory or something else? I kept running out of memory on the old machine and bulked up on this one, so it will be interesting to see what happens. Maybe I wasn't so far off when I joked about Intel buying AMD chips and modifying them...look what I found when looking for a system file, though I don't understand the relationship. It would appear they are holding hands: PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE AMD64 <SYSTEM> PROCESSOR_IDENTIFIER Intel64 Family 6 Model 44 Stepping 2, GenuineIntel <SYSTEM> Thanks for your help. Jeanne |
