Just wanted to say that in my country, Italy, solar panels are a no go for crunching (or mining). There were incentives, now no longer...
Moreover you can't install panel and use them for what you like, nor add a battery or do any other modification without having to restart all the paper procedures from scratch. |

Well,
----------------------------------------We have to get permits etc to have them put up... but the electricity produced goes to the house first, so we can use it for whatever we like... and luckily sell the rest back to the grid. Couple of new things here in Alberta (aka oil country) Canada. The NDP (Socialists) have come to power ending 40 years of conservative rule. I really REALLY don't want to start a thread crying about politics, just want to point out a couple things that might change regarding solar. One of their stated goals is to eliminate coal for utility generation much sooner than was happening with market forces. Ontario has either done away or come close to doing away with coal, and they have a large subsidy for solar generation. It has been cut in half, but still they are paying 40 cents per KW. In contrast, I was getting 8.5 cents per KW credit on my bills. In 2 years that system (as of July) will have produced about 14 Megawatts so 14,000 KW. How much has been actually sent to the grid I don't know as I don't live there and have no access to the actual meter. Lets say 10000 KW. So at 40 cents a KW that's 4000 dollars as opposed to 800 @ 8 cents. That would completely eliminate the electric bill and make roughly 800 a year plus the 1200 in savings. What they do in ontario, they only hold a credit for a year then they pay it out. So putting up solar (my 6KW system was 22,000 though I'm sure it's dropped in 2 years maybe 18,000 now?) and getting a check for 800 bucks a year, add in the 1200 your not spending and that makes 9 years it has paid for itself. When the average house price is 519,000 in Calgary what's 18,000 more to never pay electricity! P.S. I live in a condo, I'll wait for the NDP to destroy the oil industry (their stated goals are to raise corporate taxes and oil royalties) so what hasn't been done by low prices (massive layoffs already) increasing taxes should really put a crimp in jobs and over time the price of housing. Somebody POP that bubble ![]() ![]() |

Amazing to see that this thread is still active nearly four years later. I have stopped since a while crunching. My 20 machines, as was always planned are now gone to two caritative foundations. Each received 10 machines as a donation. As a result I have still 30 square meters of solar panels producing energy but no more is used for crunching, just for home use.

Yes Hypernova,You have been missed! I've wanted solar for 30 years, you were part of the final push to get it. With some of the new tech, either AMD or intel's knights landing, jump back in ![]() ![]() |

Wow, 4 years later,
----------------------------------------I just put $6000 down on my next solar system. My last system was 24 panels for a 6KW system. This new system doesn't face south, except for like 5 panels, but serious improvements on panel performance, so 11 panels will be JUST over 4 KW performance. I live in a townhome but first one in 5 years not to have stupid condo association. Have since bought a TESLA (2016) my wife is working from home in this pandemic. Hope to get somewhat close to net zero but things looking a little scary. Bought a small freezer before food gets scare trying to buy another one for a 1/4 cow. The battery backup is so RIDICULOUSLY priced..... sigh, Good luck all of you in this mess we are in. ![]() |

Any tax breaks for that solar system?

If your Tesla is still on the original batteries and you plan to keep it for a while I hope you're prepared for sticker shock if you have to replace them, especially in Canada. And FWIW electric cars are not green by any stretch of the imagination.

OK, so it's not YOUR solar panels then. Well, according to your description of your house, have you ever think of installing a wind turbine, well, if you have wind all the time? I watched a video on Youtube comparing wind turbine with solar. The main reason of choosing wind is that it blows all the time.
