Re: "The survivors"

nasher,

It takes 1 minute 12 seconds to complete watching your new signature.

Is the Weird Engine icon [brown EA] upside down intentionally?
And, what is a Weird Engine?

Re: "The survivors"

Burno,

I rounded it off.
It was 1 minute 12.05 seconds.
Used the stopwatch on my cell phone LG E970 mobile Android 4G long term evolution/Wi-Fi device.

rose Re: "The survivors"

There are some concerns regarding the frequency that BOINC writes to disk on an Android device.
BOINC does a massive amount of writing to disk due to check-pointing.
Problem is, the memory is solid state and has a limited number of writes before it fails--regardless of wear leveling.

Some Android users are halting use of BOINC for this reason.

According to BOINC FAQs:
"Write to disk at most every 60 seconds, sets the frequency at which BOINC will write a task's state to disk.
BOINC writes its own state to disk very frequently, this option won't change that frequency.
The science application does not have to follow this frequency, some follow their own frequency no matter what number you add here."

From this I conclude that users have very little control of writes to disk on any platform.

Should PC/MAC SSD users have the same concerns?

What do you think?

Re: "The survivors"

I have just cut back both Androids to run 100% on 2 CPUs.
I cut back on CPUs to reduce the amount of writes to memory.
At this time BOINC for Android (Space Science Lab, U.C. Berkeley) does not make use of the uSDHC card.
All of the wear and tear is with the devices internal memory, which can't be replaced easily by a user.

Here are some old results while running 4 CPUs.
Note: stats for the time period when both device's names were Localhost are not included because they are no longer active in Device Statistics.

BOINC | android_2 | 10/27/2013 16:27:30 | 0:039:13:31:33 | 38,166 | 99

Re: "The survivors"

well my android phone is a mytouch 3g it is no were near current for phones so i dont really worry if it starts to burn itself out...

defiantly a good warning for people who are not sure on using there phones but to be honest even with all the read wrights i have done on my systems i still have a 128 mb thumb drive that i frequently wright to every few days for years and still have not have any problems with it. so these static memory devices have lots of uses to them
