Re: "The survivors"

4 GPU threads has increased the number of WUs completed by 414%.
There is no corresponding gain in points.
In fact it may produce less points due to the scoring difference between CPU and GPU WUs.
I can't keep up with dl1000v in points and run time but have done well in number of results.

Re: "The survivors"

biggrin It's good to see C4CW has gone live again, after a brief beta.
These are the shortest WU's around (except HCC-GPU obviously) with a run time of about 3:15.
I'll be running these along with CEP2 for a while. biggrin

Re: "The survivors"

All of the projects are good humanitarian projects.
Myself, I have a personal interest in HCC and will run it until it is ended.
Would also like to run more HFCC after HCC.

I am still trying to optimize the GPU by running 4-5 threads and watching the results.
The number of results has peaked but the number of points does not appear to have done that.
It is a trial and error process that takes a lot of patience, which seems to be in short supply.
One thing for sure is that the queue size can't exceed 1 day without creating problems.
The WUs have short due dates but there is a lot of repairs coming in with even shorter due dates.
Of course the repairs have higher priority due to the short due date, which pushes the regular WUs back until they run at high priority.
Running a 2 day queue I was getting no replies because BOINC could not keep up with the work load.

Loaded BOINC 7.0.42 on the non GPU enabled PCs and they are running just fine.
Added report_results_immediately to cc_config.xml so that tracking results is a little more consistent.

Re: "The survivors"

I know that the GeForce GTX 480 will run 4-5 threads (contrary to techPowerUp thread that states 2-3).
Have not been able to try 6 threads but will do it.
The problem with optimizing thread count is the delay in results being validated.
After making a change it takes a couple of days to see which way the results are trending.

Based on experience with the HCC GPU project I can tell you that adding a GTX 480 GPU card will increase the results of an overclocked i7-2700K 300%-400%.
For $200 the results are equal to adding 3-4 i7's.
Not a bad investment.

Re: "The survivors"

I'm glad that team members are getting the badges they want.
It takes a long time to get Sapphire but once you do, it is addictive.

Found out today that my GPU has Dual Warp; meaning the Scheduler simultaneously schedules and dispatches instructions from two independent warps.
It is like having 2 graphics cards in 1.
Running 6 GPU threads and 2 CPU threads--the results are amazing.
Have not tried 8 or more GPU threads with some additional CPU threads but am working in that direction.
Very encouraged by the results a few tweaks have produced.

Re: "The survivors"

With 8 GPU threads and 7 CPU threads there are computation errors on GPU WUs due to exceeding the time limit.
Reduced to 8 GPU and 6 CPU and have not had an error for a while.
Still working to achieve the best results possible.

Using this procedure http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/showthread.php?p=2753205#post2753205
I disagree with 1) in that this does NOT increase your total run time.
However, it kicks butt with points and results.
I am using Process Explorer (thanks grumpgrampy for the tip) System Information > Engines to monitor % of GPU and CPU used.
The WCG My Results page is the final judge of performance.

If your graphics card will run HCC1 GPU you should give this a try.
In BOINC Manager > Tools > Computing Preferences > Processor Usage you can limit the GPU use so that it does not impair your UI response.
On the 4 PCs that do not have compatible GPUs I am running CPU HCC1.
You can run a mix of GPU and CPU projects so that you can still get that badge you want while boosting your total points and results.

Re: "The survivors"

The errors started up again and the servers stopped giving me GPU work so I went back to a safe configuration until the dust settles.
It may be due to a lot of changes being made in a short period.
It required a lot of suspending, stopping, editing, and starting BOINC.
Trying to find the best settings to get the most from this hardware.
The servers have no sense of humor.

It would certainly help if I knew something about what I am doing.
But then, why start now?
