As I recall, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn were know to the ancients as they were visible to the naked eye. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto were not found until after the invention of the telescope. That was 2 or 3 years before my birth though. Chiggers? Had not thought about that...but, the bugs on the front of your cars are almost non-existent, lawn mower maintenance and operating expenses are nominal but the water (for the oak trees only), and electrical are very high. Dry-land crops are non-existent so you can expect clothes that contain cotton to be higher, along with other things. Ranchers are selling their cattle early at reduced prices because they are having to feed them (feed/hay is scarce and high-priced); grazing land is all scorched and even though you see little differences in the price of meat now, it will rise later due to the shortage. All kinds of ramifications -- not just in the local area. Yea, for an old guy, Mr. Galilei seemed a bit eccentric back then but was nice enough, especially if you were willing to listen to his wild ideas. ![]() Just saw graphic that showed your part of Texas was only 4-6 degrees warmer that normal for the month of July. What it lost in summarizing the month was the fact that it was every single day. What I remember about the summer heat in DFW back in the 80's and 90's was that July was when it started to get hot but the real heat was in August. It could and would hit 105 or higher but only for 1-3 days at a time. I can't imagine weeks of it. Just be glad you don't live over near Pittsburg. ![]() |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Congratulations dkt and YellowAV! ![]() ![]() Again Forecast for today is 1 degree cooler -- only 109 today, Thursday 108 and Friday 107. 87 is the forecasted low all of those nights. I have cut back on my shutdowns and am doing a partial shutdown while outside temps are in excess of 99F. On the Pittsburg thing...are you talking about this? That is interesting. We do it in space all the time but then in space they don't have to worry about detergents and other chemicals/compounds like steroids in the water. There are major water issues in our future as the water tables continue to drop. Some really smart people are quietly obtaining water rights all over the southwest and west. Have you seen the pictures of Lake Mead lately? Look how the white area shows the drop and the Landsat images here There is an old Irish saying that I love "Hooray Anyway". Everyone have a great day. |

The pictures of lake Mead are for 2000 and 2003. Aren't there any more recent pictures, like this year?
My son, Steven, was telling me about the number of people selling gold coins, and also about the number selling stock and buying gold. I am not going to change any of my investments at this time although I may add to what I have if the prices really get low enough. |

Uranus, Neptune and Pluto were not found until after the invention of the telescope. That was 2 or 3 years before my birth though. To finish off this thread... Pluto was discovered in 1930, so if we had any members in the 85+ crowd, they might remember 8 planets. Neptune was discovered in 1846, so there's no one alive who remembers when there were 7 planets. There was some mention in a few news sources that Neptune had recently completed one orbit since the time it was discovered. The discovery of Neptune is quite an interesting story as it's location was predicted by some anomalies in the orbit of Uranus. This probably covered in Wikipedia among other places. I think they should have officially kept Pluto as a planet. The definition that some had proposed for a planet, something that has enough mass so that it's roughly spherical and orbits a central star or stars, would have been much better than the definition adopted. The "drawback" as seen by some is that the definition would mean we would have several new planets since Kuiper belt objects have been found that fit the definition. - D |
