One of my main complaints about DIRECTV is you cannot get HD reception on the local channels and on others. Those channels have two different modes of operation, and since I have a 52 in HD TV, I much appreciate being able to choose how I want to see what is provided by the dish provider, either DIRECTV or Dish. I must have gotten spoiled by Dish, but the installation of the dish by DIRECTV was better than what Dish was able to do. I think all of these problems as I see them will be resolved before my current contract with DIRECTV expires.

Hey dkt. I do not know what the policy is where you live but I get all my local chanels in HD as well as the others. I have a 50" Plasma so I share your desire for clarity. With the dual channel thing (2 with the same number, one HD and one Not), you can set that to only show the hd one...which is what I do. Use setup and favorites to create a custom menu. Works great. I have my normal one and another for when the kids are here...it includes the Disney, Nickelodeon, etc.

dkt. Try:
Menu
Choose Parental, Fav's & Setup and Select
Choose Favorite Channels and Select
Choose Setup Custom 1 and Select
Then scoot down to Edit Settings
Choose Custom 1 and Select
You should be on the tab "Add/Remove Channels"
Then go through the channels and click the boxes on the channels that you want to show on the Custom 1 menu. Note that if there two number 4s, the first one will be the HD version..same if there are two number 5s...etc etc. Once you get that all done, go left and click done. Now you have a custom 1

Then back out and go to menu again then Parental, Fav;s & Setup
Then Favorite Channels
Then Pick Custom 1 and then exit
Then hit guide and see that only the channels you selected will show up. Hope that works...it should.
