Good Sunday Morning Team Congratulations Daeloan Losing cedar trees? I planted some of which only one survived - the gophers got 'em. I got them from another IBMer who retired on purpose. This tree looks to be very healthy and I think the moist ocean air may help. We do not provide any water, and now we have the Cedar, a Hollywood Juniper, an orange tree, a fig tree, several Live Oaks (which really do good up here), and a bunch of Eucalyptus trees. We also have different pine trees; one is tall and skinny (we will keep), and the others are either or need to be cut down. I want to get rid of as many of the eucalyptus as possible since they are on all of the neighbor's properties. Not too long after I moved here, I transplanted about 140 "Cedar" (actually Juniper) trees to block the view along one part of the driveway from my much-less-than-neatfreak-neighbors (there is a shorter way to describe them..but it is less polite I'm afraid). About 130 of the "cedars" survived and got 8+ feet tall. Just driving by and looking it appears that I have lost 20% of them and with at least another week of no rain and 100+ temps, I suspect I will lose another 20%. They are about 600+ feet from the house and my water resources are all being used to try to save the Oak trees nearer the house. I also planted a bunch of Afghan pines, Bur oaks and odds and ends. I lost the Bur oaks quickly, the Austrees soon afterward and am losing some of the Afghan pines as well as a bunch of Texas Ash...perhaps 30 (which are native) and believe it or not, a mesquite. I make it a point to keep water out for the birds, Deer and other wildlife which makes our place really popular..the downside is I have to hose the bird droppings off our big porch every day and keep an eye out for the feral hog that passes by here occasionally. I am wondering about our old friend Gerald. I bet he at least got tons of rain and hopefully little or no damage. Everyone have the best day possible! |

Water is a bit of a question right now for us. My neighbor claims to have heard a loud screeching noise from the main pump so she had her husband turn off the electricity at the power pole for that well. I don't know if this means the well is dry or if the pump needs to be replaced. The pump and drilling company will have to come out tomorrow morning to see what is up (or down). ![]() |

We had about 16 inches of rain--about 8pm i could see the Chesapeake Bay water coming in on the back of our property at high tide--we were lucky this time only about a foot of water around the house--the wind wasn't very bad in our area and now waiting for power to come back on

Thanks for the update. Edit: I have been trying to find your house on Google Earth. I have your address as you know but can you email me something more so I can mark your place? Thanks e.g. Exact Lat-Lon ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by RT at Aug 29, 2011 1:47:15 AM] |

Nice trifecta by YellowAV today!
----------------------------------------Looks like Judson is a middle-aged cruncher now - in more ways than one too! How's the border situation there? Any better?RT, I see that the high there is actually expected to get below triple digits over the weekend along with a 30-40 percent chance of rain! The paper from my wife's hometown in east Texas noted that they had had 43 consecutive days of highs over 100 - and we get the paper a week or two after it comes out! Keeping my fingers crossed for you! Gerald, good to hear you're okay!!! Thanks for updating us!! I expected that you would lose power there and was hoping that was all. Glad the water didn't make it in the house. I just hope the wait to get power back is not days on end. I need to check with my brother in Charlottesville. He's the next county over from the quake epicenter and was right in the middle of the big outer rain band when Irene came through. What a month for Virginia! |

Good Morning MOT and visitors Congratulations YellowAV I guess Gerald is still without power since we have not heard from him. It is amazing want a pain that is to us in today's world. When I was a young kid on the farm, I remember them building a pole line to bring us electricity on the farm. We did fine without it...but now?? Hey Keith, if you don't mind, email me your Lat-Lon as well..it would be nice to "locate" all of you guys. dkt darth, nano, judson, coingames, xroule, David, Dr. Mike, Daeloan, Yellow, parmesian, Chris, finman, Vuj, BLueprint, jpenning, Pohsoon, Lawerence and.... (Unless you mind and that is just fine...just curious (one of my lifelong ailments)). Keith, It is cloudy this morning and the temps are rising more slowly than usual. Thanks for the well wishes..and keep your fingers crossed for the dried up and the drowned. Everyone have the best day possible. ![]() |

<snip> I planted some of which only one survived - the gophers got 'em. </snip> About the only advantage of the exceptionally hard and rocky soil where I live is that we never get gophers (or ground squirrels or moles). Some things grow well in it; most things don't. Landscaping is a real challenge. Fence post holes are often dug with jackhammers. The contractors call it "nature's concrete".- D Speaking of post holes, I was examining things yesterday and I see quite a few of the fence post have rotted or gotten to by termites. The hard, rocky soil you describe sounds perfect for what I want to do -- build a rock wall around my property. |
