Uh-oh, another issue with machines set to run 60% CPU usage on these betas: they are actually running 100% CPU usage and are getting too hot! (This is happening on one laptop running Ubuntu 10.04 and another running Ubuntu 11.04.) Thanks for mentioning it. I have a laptop CPU running at 87 degrees because of this, which is dangerous. If it weren't in a cold room, it'd be over 100! Also, the number of CPU seconds used and remaining are not being updated at anything like the usual rate. The CPU time used can be reported as the same figure for over 5 mins! It looks like boinc isn't communicating properly with the task process. |

And another machine WU that had the PowerFail:

Yep, confirmed: these beta WUs are completely wild, once started they do what they want and ignore BOINC completely.
----------------------------------------Edit: Added "once started" @Kremmen The CPU time reporting problems had already been identified. Please read back a few posts for details. ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by JmBoullier at Jul 30, 2011 2:05:58 AM] |

I just tried to suspend WU on my XP and it works correctly; mfbabb2,have you checked with Windows system monitor that it stopped (or rather not), or were you just trusting BOINC Manager which actually says the WU is suspended although it is still running? |

Yep, confirmed: these beta WUs are completely wild, once started they do what they want and ignore BOINC completely. Guess I'm lucky. I'm not seeing any issues with mine. If I suspend one, another in the cache starts. CPU to run times are all above 99.90%, even on the ones that have run 4+ hours.
In 1969 I took an oath to defend and protect the U S Constitution against all enemies, both foreign and Domestic. There was no expiration date.

I did noticed earlier that my thinkpad (WinXP 32-bit) was running warmer than usual, but I thought it was something else. I have set that laptop to use 33% of CPU time. Right now is colder, is still running the same beta, and it seems to be behaving properly:
----------------------------------------On another laptop (Win7 64-bit) I got 2 betas, one already finished, the other is running following the CPU time limit set in the client. The finished one has this information: CPU time: 03:47:07 Elapsed time: 03:22:37 [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Jul 30, 2011 2:23:41 AM] |

If I suspend one, another in the cache starts. You have to check with the system monitor that the suspended one is actually stopped: since BOINC thinks it is in control it does start another WU even when the "suspended" beta is still running. E.g. in my Ubuntu 11.04 quad I then have five WUs running at the same time.To everybody: since the suspend problem seems to exist only under Linux, please don't forget to tell which system you are using when you report about this problem (and for other problems as well anyway ). |

I confirm, that if you suspend one beta task on windows XP system, it does suspend properly

I can confirm the faulty beta task suspension on Linux (Ubuntu 11.04).
----------------------------------------I've been mostly crunching to clear my cache from Dengue tasks when the beta job arrived. And then suspending the beta job has my computer both a dddt2 and the beta task running, both with 50% system load (on a single-processor system). Boinc Manager and the output of boinccmd don't indicate this however (need to use the top command-line tool or something similar). According to these programs, the beta task is nicely suspended. |
